How much of the Jets performance was really on Darnold?

Fantastic research and post. Really puts things in perspective.

Sam isn't immune from blame, but he was really put in an epically hellish situation...a true clusterfug. He never had a chance to succeed.

Also, the fact that he managed to finish out his last 2 seasons with More TDs than INTs still, is a testament to his talent.

In fact, in his "best" season as a Jet, he had 2 games where he threw a bunch of INTs.   Take away those two games and he'd have been 17 TDs and 6 (yes...SIX!) INTs.

The more I look up what happened, its impossiple to stay MOST of the suckage.  Darnold didn't punt, kick-off, return kick-offs or play defense.

Not to mention that he didn't coach.  Looking at the totality of the numbers  you put together, I don't think anybody up there did.

Excellent research, BTW.

The Jets flat out sucked. We'll find out how much of it was on Darnold this season when he takes the field for us surrounded by better weapons with a better OC calling the shots.

Yep. Like it or not, the Panthers are going to the answer the Sam Darnold question in 2021.

If he flames out or is mediocre here, he will be relegated to being a backup QB the rest of his NFL career.

Yeah, all these people acting like he has the weight of the world off his shoulders getting out of NY aren't being realistic. There's only 32 starting NFL QB jobs available. He just got bounced from one and there wasn't exactly a bidding war for his services. This is likely his last shot to walk into a building as the presumed starter.

Yeah. I know the New York media is crazy and so is that spotlight there but it isn't going to get any less bright given the position he is in. And we have no backup plan, so he can't fade quietly into the background if things start going south.

The problem with the Jets involves a  conspiracy theory.  The New York Jets hired a guy by the name of Mike Macagnan.  Mike Macagnan should  have never had the  job and the stories  you hear now makes  it clear he was a "different" kind of guy.  How did he get the job- Charley Casserly was hired by the Jets to hire Mike Macagnan.  Yes this is bizarre and there is no rationale explanation. Macagnan couldn't draft so the team simply had no talent.  That  said- Darnold  was part of the problem- he shouldn't have been drafted at 3- Allan and Jackson should have been rated higher and were better  options.  Realistically- look at the year's  since- QBs like Darnold are not drafted that highly anymore.

Huh?

It seemed an obvious implication that any Darnold suckage would only relate to the time he was actually on the field but yes, agreed that he did not make any of those units suck.

Just a note, the Jets in 2020 had the toughest schedule in the league with a .594 SOS.  They did beat two winning, playoff teams,  Cleveland (11-5) at home and the Rams (10-6)  away in weeks 15 and 16 where Darnold threw no interceptions and had passing ratings of 87.4 and 99.8 respectively .    The Rams and Browns each won a playoff game last year before being eliminated.

Meanwhile the Panthers in 2020 ended 5-11 with a .531 strength of schedule (9th hardest).  The only playoff team the Panthers beat was the 7-9 Washington Football Team who were eliminated in their initial playoff game.  The Panthers beat the following teams with winning records:

I say it's 75% Jets, 25% on Darnold.  Fitt,  Rhule and Brady clearly think he's redeemable but Darnold also made unnecessary mistakes. It's what happens when you're running for your life.

Exactly. When it is 3rd and long and you know you are facing a heavy rush with no real protection you end up trying to do too much to make a play and instead screw up. One of the big things Sam will need to learn is to.play within the offense and trust his guys to do their job. Something he didn't really have in NY. That is why these team building sessions and hanging out after practice is so vital to build a sense of trust and respect.

It's tough to say actual percentages.  Sam Darnold threw 45 TD to 39 interceptions so far.  In 2020 he threw 11 interceptions in 12 games.    Teddy threw 11 interceptions in 15 games.    Now swap  the schedules and the olines.  Do the stats really stay the same?  I just don't think so.
