Panthers UDFA group ranked 7th best.

Recommended Posts

according to NBC's Thor Nystrom.  He liked the NFC South... Falcons ranked 1st and Saints ranked 5th.

7. Carolina Panthers

Name Rk Pos Ht Wt RAS Comp
David Moore 176 iOL18 6'2 330 6.82 Parker Collins
Paddy Fisher 241 LB27 6'3 240 3.36 Jack Cichy
Spencer Brown 262 RB20 5'11 208 4.89 Spencer Ware
Peyton Ramsey 307 QB15 6'2 215 4.2 Nathan Peterman
Mason Stokke 343 FB4 6'2 242 6.15 Anthony Firkser
Kavika Fonua X S44 5'11 197 6.88 ---
Oscar Draguicevich III X P8 5'9 188 --- ---

The Panthers’ UDFA class was very much like Matt Rhule and company’s first two drafts -- highly focused on infrastructure.

What this seven-man group (six, if you don’t count Fonua, who only got a tryout) lacks in depth, it makes up for at the top with prospects who have a legitimate shot to crack the roster and contribute one day.

Carolina left the draft with the offensive line still a need area, and thus did well to agree to terms with David Moore, who tied for No. 12 in the UDFA class with $125k in guarantees. You can think of the top-32 UDFA guarantees sort of like Round 8 of the NFL Draft. If Roger Goodell had gotten drunk and nostalgic on Saturday night and extended the draft a round so he could emcee the final 32 picks from his basement like the good old days, I would have applauded the Panthers popping Moore with their pick and called it a steal at an area of need. Discounted by NFL because of small-school background and sawed-off frame. But Moore has long arms to negate length concerns. He's also a strong athlete that plays ticked off. Rhule's gonna love him.

After that, the Panthers grabbed unathletic tackle machine LB Paddy Fisher, who will basically give you 90% of Chiefs second-rounder Nick Bolton’s skillset. I’m a big fan of UAB RB Spencer Brown -- to stick with the percentage thing, "The Moose" is about 90% of 2020 Packers’ second-round pick AJ Dillon, offering the same skills in a less-athletic package (I thought Brown's 49th-percentile RAS composite would push him over the hump to get drafted, but no dice).

Peyton Ramsey seems like a jolly lad to have on the practice squad soaking up Joe Brady’s offense for a few years. Meanwhile, I’d be more intrigued by the addition of Wisconsin FB Mason Stokke -- one of the class’ best fullbacks, and a signing that otherwise had Alec Ingold potential -- had the Panthers not taken Tommy Tremble in R3. I’m not sure there will be another open roster spot for a blocker.

My bet is that a lot of these UDFA become our practice squad.

With that big signing bonus, OG David Moore is a lock for our PS (if not the tail end of the roster).  How he does in training camp will determine where he ultimately ends up.  But he'll be a Panther in 2021.

We're pretty thin at LB so there's an opening for Paddy Fisher.  He could also be a special teams demon for the team if he makes the full roster.

The Panthers will likely run a "ground & pound" rushing-oriented offense this season to support QB Sam Darnold.  That bodes well for any RB like Spencer Brown trying to make the extended roster (and for FB Mason Stokke as well - though his position might be lost to the versatility of Tommy Tremble).

Finally QB Peyton Ramsey is a smart player that the Panthers could do a lot worse with on the PS.  The son of a coach, Ramsey might make for a good fit for the team long-term as the backup QB.

Take out Moore and this group is the weakest group league wide. Finesser used up all his draft mojo with all the trading back. He focused on signing players at workouts, my guess is he thought most of the UDFAs where too far out of shape.

I think the panthers had the lowest number of signed UDFAs and one was a token punter.

You do understand with a big free agent class and 11 draft picks, the Panthers didn't have a lot of spots left on the 90 man off-season roster.

Yes. Leading up to draft he signed a few guys like OT Ivey and WR Simon. He could have passed on them and had more spots.

lol complaining about not getting enough udfa's. People will literally bitch about anything

Bitachin? Complaining? I just question why he filled the spots right before the draft, rather than have the least UDFA pool in the league. His choice, but most of these have be on the market for over one year. The panthers were about the only team to sign players less than one month before the draft. But if want to call that whatever, go ahead.

    • Yeah that with the Taylor Moton clip from yesterday...These guys have felt completely hamstrung the last two weeks
    • Our receivers were right there on the field, they also watched Bryce on film, and it sounds like they're looking forward to Dalton. Xavier Legette on Andy Dalton: "He got a fine understanding of things. I like the way he throws the ball and how to position it, so I feel like we going be good... On the go balls, he knows the right timing and the right among of air... The deep ball that's something I feel I'm good at, and that's something I been working on at practice [with Andy]... I ain't talked to him [Bryce] about it [the benching] yet, but we just got to continue to play. Next man up, and it's Andy."   Diontae Johnson on Andy Dalton: "A vet who's been back there for a while and knows the game, so once you have a guy like that back there, it allows you to be yourself more... He takes a lot off our plate just by having that experience knowing what to do, getting us the right calls, knowing when the pressure is coming..."
