Panthers in discussions with Wofford College to bring training camp back to Spartanburg

The Carolina Panthers are taking the next steps to return to Wofford College for training camp in 2021.

“We are in discussions with Wofford College and are excited about the possibility of returning to Spartanburg for training camp,” a team spokesperson said in a statement. When reached by The Observer, Wofford College deferred comment to the Panthers.

The Panthers held training camp at Bank of America Stadium last year due to a league-wide rule that forced all teams to hold camps at their practice facilities in order to reduce the spread of COVID-19. The team extended their partnership with a two-year contract that originally went from 2020 through 2021.

Fewer and fewer teams are holding camps away from their facilities. Last year, only eight other teams were scheduled to do so: Bills, Colts, Cowboys, Chiefs, Rams, Raiders, Steelers and Washington.

The Panthers franchise had held camp at the Spartanburg, S.C. college every year since the team’s first season in 1995.

It was previously unclear how many more times the team would return due to the building of the new team headquarters and facilities in Rock Hill. Due to COVID-19, the opening of that site has been delayed and training camp is not scheduled to move there until 2023 after previously being scheduled to open in Summer 2022.

Looks like it...

I know a lot of folks aren't big fans of the playing surface down there, and even less are fans of the heat.

That heat is the best tool for keeping the casual fan and the other teams fans away so the REAL tards can get a closer look.  I've been that tard several times.

    • After the Chiefs game a 6'5 X would really help in the Red zone. I would also love to add Slayton in FA
    • But again, you can restock a defense through free agency much easier than offensive skill positions. Spend all our cap space on defense, take a true elite prospect who also happens to fit a position of need in T-Mac, and then use the rest of our picks on defense. Again, every season there’s a smattering of great DL, LB, and DB options in free agency, a Top 10 WR never hits free agency, ever.  The only way you get one is through the draft or giving up 1st round picks in a trade for one. If he’s there when we’re on the clock, he has to be the pick, he’s just that good.
    • It must be an early Christmas for JT O'Sullivan having Thielen back so he could put a coal in Thielen's stocking every chance he gets.  Honestly, the biggest surprise is not so much the anticipation. There were those moments here and there last year as well. It's that even that one positive quality he had seemingly vanished his first two games to where it looked like it was all but over, only for it to start coming back some until you get exclamation points all over this game film. And some of those throws were under a lot of duress, something I feel is something new. Finally, those deeper shots are starting to land. Not all of them, but enough that defenses may have to start respecting them. No guarantees whether this will end up as more of anomaly but I certainly hope it isn't. The Green Bay game was a sampler of what BY could be. Against KC, we got a meal. If we could start getting these meals regularly, we might actually have something to work with here.
