I watched Maximum Overdrive with my nephew (I think he was 12 at the time). He was really into it.

I noticed he had his head next to one of my stereo speakers. The controls were to my left. At a particularly tense moment in the movie, I turned the volume way up and hit the power button.

He dove for the floor

I think King is fairly self aware in that department though. He indulged in a little self parody in IT Chapter 2, playing a bookseller that tells the author character his endings stink.

The movies always had that campy feel. The 80's were rife with horror/comedy tacky one-liners and jump scares.
