Tommy Tremble -- Here's a Breakdown If You're Interested**

Quote

Tremble is one of the more interesting prospects in the draft overall, as having mostly been used as more of a blocking specialist alongside more conventional tight-ends in his two seasons of contribution at Notre Dame he has limited statistical production to this point. In fact, with just 35 catches for 401 yards and 4 touchdowns to his name. What he does have, however, are good athletic testing numbers and some of the most impressive blocking tape for a tight end prospect in recent memory.

I think Tremble is the perfect TE this year given the questions concerning the OL. I can't help but wonder if they drafted him solely for his blocking. If he eventually develops into a catching TE, that would just be the icing on the cake.

Tremble is a ''forecast'' pick, excellent for the short term in the sense Rhule has been saying he wants to build a ''tough, and physical'' team. He checks those boxes.

The interesting thing with Tremble is the POTENTIAL, he's probably the day one best blocking TE on our team, and that's generally the hard part for rookie TE's.

Hands get better with reps, and ND just did not use him that way, running a 4.59 and having enough height and weight (Panther's site says he's 6'4 / 250, article says 6'3 / 240) -- it's a lot to be intrigued about.

In an offense like ours that creates a space, and a QB that isn't timid, I think we could see some decent production in the passing game as a rookie. He has the athleticism on those dump offs to turn the corner on defenders.

With the attention our other options, receive he should have some space to work with out of the backfield, and underneath.

I really like the pick of Tremble, but my heart and head are fighting over what he's going to be. May be I'm just getting older and more cynical, but I feel like he's going to be a guy that plays well, but people are disappointed because he never quite lives up to the "hype" of what everyone expects in their wildest dreams.

Honestly it's a guy you really love to have at the end of the day, but his value gets lost on certain fans.

@Madwolf, I am 47 years older than you, and I can assure you age has no correlation to cynicism.  Despite more blows in life than you can name, I remain eternally optimistic.  It's just a more rewarding and enjoyable way to get through the journey.

I was a Dolphins fan in the 60's, living there and surviving the early George Wilson days, until it finally gelled in the 70's, and culminated in perfection.  Now I've lived here since '81 and have cheered the Panthers on from their inception, too.  We are on the cusp of wonderment.

Tremble will play his part, even if only as a blocking machine for CMC.  More than that is gravy on the mashed potatoes.

I was a little worried when we picked Tremble. There were better pass catching options available and I wasn't aware of just how good of a blocker Tremble was. I didn't realize how exceptional an athlete is his either. This really was an example of how successes in Free Agency really can affect the draft.

Picking up Dan Arnold really freed us up to take Tremble (Which sounds crazy sense he is a tight end too). I think having a pass catching TE, allowed Fit to take Tremble who will be a tool that we can use in a lot of ways as a blocker. Its a luxury we could not have afforded if we didn't have someone capable of being a reliable option in the passing game at that position.

In Time Tremble may develop into a decent pass catching option also and become a well rounded player for us, but right from the start I think he will still be able to impact games occasionally with what he already brings to the table as a blocker.

What’s wild about tremble is that most tight ends struggle coming into the pros because they have to learn to block at the pro level.

Tremble has to learn how run routes. For a tigh end, I’d say having the blocking down gives you an advantage

The fact that he can contribute as a blocker instantly is what makes me hype about this.

Compare this to Ian Thomas, who had to get more polished as a receiver AND as a as a blocker. There's a HUGE chance Tremble becomes a JAG at receiver to outright bad, but if his blocking pans out we have the receiving core where we wouldn't need him to be more than the 5th option At Best.

For those of you who read my posts, you know that I am the first to say if I don't understand something.  Said that about the defense just recently--but when I have something to share, perspectives from being a coach or player in college, I do what I can---realizing that the difference between my experience and the NFL is huge.

As for the point about his receiving--from what I have seen, he has "unsure" hands--fixed by experience.  Catching a pass in the backyard or at the beach is a lot different than catching a pass that is being drilled toward you while your head is looking back to the ball and there is a LB or SS taking an angle so that he knocks the numbers off your jersey at the moment it hits your hands in front of thousands of people.  Having said that, knowing how to run routes gets separation, and when you have 3-4 other teammates on the field that are bigger threats than you, it means you can fly beneath the radar.  The secret for a tight end is to recognize who is covering you during your first two steps and tilting his balance favorably as you break into your route. Get explosion, turn your head as your hands find the ball, snatch it, and get it into your rib cage and cradle it asap.  Again, while exploding away from contact, not going into a fetal position expecting to be hit.  Wesley Walls was this program's second best TE ever, but once he made the catch, he was done in most cases--he fell for no reason.  I never liked that because it went against all I was ever taught. But he had a long career, I got eliminated from the game as a red shirt sophomore.

Blocking is harder because you have to anticipate and take angles where you think another guy is going to be and when you expect to meet him there. Then you have to beat him because he is sure going to try to destroy you.  And defensive guys are the toughest, meanest, athletes on the field.  I do not like them. So yes, blocking is very difficult--and frankly, it is not as glorious as catching a pass for a TD.  The crowd rarely cheers for your blocking, so there is a lack of selfish motivation to do it.  Aside from winning the play and game, the main motivation is to not do something so bad the coach runs it back and forth 20 times in the film room while your teammates laugh and he curses.  That is the worst.

So I see Tremble as a player who could become a dominant TE because what he has perfected, few do well.  Where he needs to improve, many do.

So are you are wondering if I was a good college player?  No. Being average was my goal.  I almost made it.

I think the biggest thing is that drops have been mentioned and if it’s mentioned on a college career of 35 catches then it’s a problem. Maybe the coaches were so focused on his blocking that he didn’t work enough on catching. I think it’s a stretch to think he’ll contribute anything outside of blocking this year but if he’s willing to work and become at least an adequate receiver, he can contribute some timely catches. With the WRs we have, I still can’t imagine him ever having a big yardage contribution. The folks that think he might turn into Kittle need to understand he’s likely not going to ever get that volume. Deebo and Aiyuk only played last year together. Nothing like Moore, Anderson, Samuel/Marshall/Moore/Smith and CMC.

He's probably the best TE outside of Pitts so I would say they will probably work him in. Honestly catching the ball is probably the easiest thing to correct. Samuel struggled with it until Norv fix his problem so I see no reason Brady can fix Trembles.

I hope so, but I still don’t see him getting enough targets for the folks who think he might become Kittle. Also, I don’t think this was really a good TE class after Pitts. If he’s the 2nd best TE with 35 career catches, it’s not a great class. Kittle had double that and he went in the 5th because of it.

I don’t know if I like that we took him with some solid G prospects on the board but I am excited about his blocking ability. We need an actual good blocking TE to help out our LT whoever it is.

Pitts is really a WR so honestly he probably was the most athletic true TE. Yeah not a dominating class but here's the thing. Its not that he runs lazy routes or is 50/50 on 1000 balls. He seriously only got 35 touches and sometimes you just need more experienced coaching. ND was just fine using him as a nasty blocker and letting Mayer get most of the receiving yards. Tommy T is extremely young and very well may be used just like at ND with Arnald getting most of the red zone snaps. Still I could see Brady using him midfield as an outlet on plays. I know Brady loves using guys people forget and Tommy T is deceptive in that way.

When we get in those 4th and 1 or 3 yards of the goalline and he smacks the poo out of a linebacker and let's our back get those yards, he is worth that pick.  We struggled on those last year.  Some of those were the difference between touchdowns and field goals or turnover on downs.  When you continually lose by 1 score or less, it's usually those little things that make the difference.  It's a block made or a block missed, a complete or an incomplete pass that determine the outcome.

He'll be a perfect 3rd down conversion.  I saw a clip where he went through the middle like he was blocking and snuck out for a huge gain.  We'll have plenty of 3rd down conversion from other players that just about every time we use him.  It will work.  20 or 30 catches for the season would be awesome.

    • We really haven’t seen him in the playoffs. In the 2-3 games he has played he looked good. But those sample sizes are so small. It’s Koochies goal now. Let’s rally behind him.
    • lol the weather man? I think he had some substance abuse issues going on but might be doing better.
