Scott Fitterer: We want Sam Darnold to just flush what's happened

There is nothing wrong with that but fans being optimistic is different from the front office. If they keep building him up like this and he has struggles adjusting the media and fans will be even harsher on him. They want him to approach this like he's a rookie again but that's not the way life works. See Teddy Bridgewater who had his own share of optimism around him this time last year.

They're not building him up right now. They did that right after the trade. Now they're starting to backpedal and temper expectations. Honestly, from a PR perspective they're handling this well. I imagine they're handling it similarly internally. This should give Darnold his best chance to succeed. Honestly, I still think this whole effort will be a failure but we've cast our lot. Gotta focus on giving it the best chance to succeed that we can. At the end of the day, if Darnold can't flush the past out of his system he'll be flushed out of the NFL soon and he knows it. That's plenty of pressure by itself. The team doesn't need to pile anymore than that in him.

Idk the way they went all in on offensive help in the draft and seem to be good with the quarterbacks behind him suggests they expect him to stick. Hey I hope it works out too. All I want is something worth watching my expectations are low but others seem to be thinking playoffs already so we'll see.

If Sam can’t move on from NY, then he has lost one of his greatest qualities....the ability to move on and let it go.  Think your front office did their homework, not just as the player, but about the young man.  He will blame himself for loses, praise his team for wins.  No sulking, or pointing fingers at others.

They’re acting, and showing, they believe in him, they know he’ll be hard on himself no matter the praise, when he needs to be.

Kinda tough to have confidence in yourself playing for a sh*t organization, especially the QB position.  Get over it, and move on.

Why do you think that?

It seems like it is hard for some of these young QB's to recover from tough first stops in the NFL. I wish it was just as easy as being able to forget it all.

2 parts involved in overcoming.

1) mindset of the person trying to overcome (am i broken or am i growing?)

2) your environment (the people you are surrounded by and the people in your ear)

i think Sammy has it good on both of those.

People who have been watching him and talking to him talk about just how resilient and positive he is.

He also has the best coaching he could have asked for in coming from that dumpster fire in New York/Jersey.

Because the vast majority of top pick bust reclamation projects do. The successes are rare.

Then I suppose we should just give up and watch some other sport next season since it's obvious this will be a bust, right?  🤨

i have to admit to being a bit pissed off by all this.

could you imagine what it would have been like if Cam had had access to all this a few years ago? when he was still young and in his developmental phase?

continuity ftl.

we should have moved on from hurney, rivera, and esp. shula long ago...and not gone after some relic like turner.

Ron is an old school smash mouth football coach and he has some sort of ongoing bromance with Hurney, The Consistently Incompetent One.

If we knew then what we know now, we would have realized Cam was doomed from the start.  He was sacrificed at the the cross roads of Smash Mouth Ave and Consistently Incompetent St.

Is that what I said? No, the team is giving him the best possible chance to succeed. That's all you can do. I just hope that if he fails, we move on quickly just like we did when Teddy failed.

Let's neither crown him nor cushion him before he ever takes a meaningful snap for us.

We might not see anything until mid-season that let's us know what he's going to become here. Lots of moving pieces, lots to gel, opposing teams that are squarely trying to make him fail (because that's their job).

It's going to be a long wait until opening day, but I can hardly wait.

Its called optimism.

IF Sam works out, this is a HUGE win for us.

The problem is when people adopt the mindset that if you aren't optimistic then you aren't a fan . People obliterated me about being negative on teddy early and I see how that turned out lol

Going to respond to both your posts here.

The front office shouldn't be optimistic about the guys they have brought in? What would you rather have, them going around saying these guys suck and we'll be out of a job next year?

Why can't Darnold approach this season like he is a rookie, clearing his mind, and be open to learning from the coaches? Is there some law that states he cannot have an open mind and forget about being in NY the last three years?

They didn't go all in on offense in the draft. You do remember they picked a corner with the eighth pick right? And then took a another corner and DT later in the draft? Yeah, the Panthers drafted more offensive guys than defensive this time, but they needed to do that no matter who the QB is.

Would you rather they didn't act like they expect Darnold to stick? Would you rather they came out and said "Yeah, he sucked in NY. We expect him to suck here, and will replace him next season. So, don't worry about it fans. Buy the merchandise and tickets all season. You'll be rewarded with another high draft pick!" Perception and public opinion are powerful things. If the Panthers believe in Darnold, he might believe in himself and forget about the Jets, and maybe some of the fans will too.

He's on the team and the starting QB. The Panthers are giving him a chance. There is no use being upset about it since you couldn't do anything about it except for not watching them play or buying merch this year.
