Not sure if you subscribe to the Athletic or not, but Joe is doing a lot of good writing in there, not the same as when he was at the Observer.

I know a lot of people like to bash him because he is not breaking news. His article today about Jaycee Horn was excellent.

I'm critical of him because I believe he asks bad questions.

Pre draft on the huddle: “Tepper is going to ruin this team. We need to get this coaching staff and Tepper out of Charlotte. All he cares about is soccer. He wants a QB and he’s going to interfere with the decision making to get his guy. He’s another Jerry Jones.”

During the draft on the huddle: “This staff doesn’t know what they are doing. These trade downs are stupid. Look at all the talent going off the board. These guys don’t seem to have a plan. Half these rookies won’t make the roster. It’s all about Fit being able to say Darnold cost us nothing. We have to get these guys out of here. Rhule is just a college coach.”

Post draft huddle: “We absolutely crushed this draft! Fit did a masterful job trading back, adding valuable assets and filling out this roster. We have a clear direction. We want to play press man coverage and we want athletes! The plan is clearly coming together. It’s so refreshing to see Tepper is letting the football scouts and coaches make the football decisions.”

Chinn at FS?  Really?  Not saying thats good or bad really, but I always saw him more of a thumper, in the box SS.  But im sure he would excel no matter where they decide to put him on the field.  Hes a superstar waiting to happen.

LOL

😄

To be fair though, at least none of those viewpoints were universally held.

My biggest question going into the draft was whether or not Tepper would keep his word and let his football people do their jobs rather than inserting himself into the process.

When push came to shove, he did indeed keep his nose out of it, and I'm happy about that.

That was just Smarty Hurney the whole time.

Regarding Justin Fields, Person confirms that the Panthers interest in him was largely a smokescreen trying to bait other teams to trade up. That David Tepper wanted him was true, but he wasn't going to force it.

Also as previously suggested, Fitterer and Rhule weren't sold on anybody other than Trevor Lawrence and Zack Wilson. And yes, they do have a lot of confidence in Sam Darnold, more than they did Justin Fields (which is kinda obvious at this point).

Regarding last year, said he doesn't believe Marty Hurney ever really embraced the rebuild (and given that he was on an expiring contract, that's not surprising). The end result wound up being kind of a partial, half ass rebuild that included signing guys like Bridgewater.

These things shouldn’t be news but the huddle will always huddle.

The whole thing of people attaching their personas to past failures like Hurney and Bridgewater is really kind of weird.

I guess the next step is somebody on here wailing that we never should have fired John Fox or parted ways with Kerry Collins.

(dear mods, if these should appear please ban them immediately)

I'd prefer to keep Chinn around the ball as much as possible. He'd probably be fine at FS but seems a bit of a waste of his run support and on-ball abilities.

That said I think the whole 'interchangeable safety positons' factors in, so hopefully it wpuld minimize that.

Here’s what he said when someone asked about the free safety position ....

“I think Chinn is going to play mainly at safety (Panthers don’t differentiate between free safety and strong in Snow’s defense).  But they could look to add there.”

Of all the quarterbacks to stake your job and reputation on out of the gate I'm not sure Sam Darnold behind an until proven otherwise suspect offensive line fits the bill but here we are. We have seen this patting ourselves on the back after the draft dog and pony show before. The approach was different but will the results be? Let us all hope that the two quarterbacks we passed on are mediocre and Sam Darnold has a career year. Even the most optimistic fan should wince a little reading that if they know their Panthers history.

Here are some actual answers, and there honestly is some good info in here:

Person describes Scott Fitterer and Dan Morgan as "cooking burgers and having beers in the backyard" close, so he believes the assistant GM job is Morgan's to lose.

Said that the Panthers brass had really zeroed in on Jaycee Horn over the last few weeks leading up to the draft, but that if Penei Sewell had dropped to eight it would have made things very interesting.

Mentioned that the Panthers don't appear to be interested in former Bears tackle Charles Leno, or in signing a veteran for the backup quarterback role.

Regarding last year, said he doesn't believe Marty Hurney ever really embraced the rebuild (and given that he was on an expiring contract, that's not surprising). The end result wound up being kind of a partial, half ass rebuild that included signing guys like Bridgewater.

While attempting to trade up, the Bears didn't offer the Panthers as good a deal as they did the Giants (which doesn't make a lot of sense, but it's the Bears).

A few quick hits:

Believes there's a good chance the free safety spot could be manned by Jeremy Chinn...

Sets the over under for wins this season at 8.5...

Doesn't believe that Darnold failing would get Rhule or Fitterer fired...

Thinks the team could have "real competition" at the kicker spot...

Rookie minicamp will be next weekend...

Good stuff
