Verge's Draft Grades

I agree with verge on most of these. My biggest issues are echos of others. Tremble pick is a F. Blocking H-back is not even on most NFL rosters. On the value chart if you rank Blocking H-back, its right above long snapper.....which brings me my next issue. Personally Im never spending a draft pick on ANY special teamers. Market is flooded with decent Kickers, punter, and long snappers. Id took a risk and drafted Trey Smith 10 out of 10 over a fuging long snapper. Lastly instead of the 2nd trade back, Drafted JOK too.

A pure blocking tight end does seem like poor value in the 3rd where you can find starter potential at more important positions like guard and wr. I've been able to reason it in a couple ways

1. He can help shore up our deficiencies on the offensive line with meaningful snaps as a rookie. Think of him as a part-time starter 6th O lineman.

2. We lost both Manhertz and Armah. He effectively takes the place of 2 starters in 1.

3. Many clamored for us to draft another lineman but at a certain point you can have too many bodies. We already signed Erving, Elflein, and Miller, still have Daley and Little, drafted Christenson and Brown and signed Moore as an UDFA. Some of those names will compete for time at tackle but all of them could or have been used at guard. Why not take a guy who will actually see the field and help the line than someone who'd compete for a backup spot with 4 others.

4. Short yardage situations were a major weakness in 2020. Drafting him was an effort to shore that up.

5. Ideally you take a guy like that in the 5th or later but he was 52nd on Daniel Jeremiah's board. If we really liked him, I'm not sure we could have counted on him being there even in the 4th.

As far as the long snapper, I have no problems there. Getting a potential starter with a comp 6th (basically 7th), even special teams, is a win. And seeing as how a long snapper was drafted 3 picks later only sells it more.

I agree, but in a year or two from now, I am willing to bet Shi Smith is an A+.  I think he was undervalued going in and he dropped.

Tremble will be that locker room guy--fan favorite--special teams hero and basic slobber knocker.  Agreed, he could have gone a round later--although some had him as the #3 TE in a weak TE class.

I am most excited about what we found in Nixon, Brown, and Smith later in the draft.  Not exaggerating--those three are better than some of Marty's top 3 draft picks--I can't think of a Marty draft that was much better.

Yes, I think Smith is going to be great and I LOVE TREMBLE!!!!. I think his evaluation is too low and I think we see him much better than that (obviously I guess). His blocking is vicious. His ability to take out defenders at the 2nd level is going to increase CMCs big play possibilities a lot I think. I also thought his route running was already pretty could as well as his catching ability and both will only improve with time and coaching. He's only 20. Plus as a 12th man hybrid type he will really allow us to run some different looks at defenses and catch them sleeping a couple of times a game. WHEN his receiving games improves a little he will be a problem. He's lateral moves are great and I can see us sneaking him into wide open space during a game as the get used to him running across the line to pancake someone but every once in a while instead he slips up field into an empty space for a big gain. Plus he should really improve our redzone offense. I think that pick is a sleeper A. One of my favorite picks

Appreciate the analysis but I'm disappointed you didn't give the long snapper an A+. The video of him getting the call from Rhule was one of the highlights of our whole draft

Lol this is the dumb poo that had people loving teddy. The highlights of the draft were the players picked. You know, the ones that will actually play? 90% of prospects react the same way when drafted and actually add value to the team. Verge should’ve just called the pick an F instead of camouflaging the grade as “long snapper”

Lighten up guy. Do you have trouble picking up on jokes? I'm not grading picks based on interviews even if it was hilarious. But guess what? It doesn't even matter cause I'm still giving the pick a positive grade. You realize he was our comp 6th? One of the last picks in the 6th round. I'd venture to guess that over 80% of the players picked after him won't make their team's 53 man roster. At that point in the draft you can take one of the top 1 or 2 special teamers in the country or a guy with major question marks overlooked round after round by 31 other teams who has to compete with a half dozen NFL veterans at his position just to make the roster. We took a guy with a great chance to be a starter for years to come and save $1 million on our cap this year. And if the pick wasn't justifiable enough, Washington picked a long snapper 3 picks later.

I mean...in 2019 Hubbard did rush for 2000+ yards and 20+ TDs out of Ok St. That’s crazy.   I mean he has got to be better than Reggie doesn’t he?

But I did think they would go for a power back.

With time quite possibly but I’m talking in the next season or two. His weaknesses are going to take a bit to correct, plus his inconsistencies. Given time he could be a serious asset.

I think this pick sealed Reggie’s fate.  I think Reggie is done here with this pickup.  Reggie to me was more athlete than RB.

Which will be a shame if he leaves and  we never got a chance to tap into Reggie’s back of tricks.  would have love to of seen some creative trick play with Reggie.

Great post and 1-5 are all facts. I know Hunter long was picked two picks before. IMO TE was a group that was light in talent, honestly after DT it may have been the next "weakest" group. I just didnt have Tremble ranked in the 3rd, like at all. DJ and many others did, as you stated. I just got to hope he pulls a Herbert and is much better pro. Plus who isnt a fan of those blocks?

Long Snapper just one of my rules about the draft. Im using draft picks on football players.(side fact, I help my cousin train long snap NFL)  I will say I HATED when Smarty Marty traded a fuging 6th for JJ Jasen, 14 years later he was right. Just one of my rules, I value late draft picks more than using them on a player that *may only play 3 snaps a game. Youre also right, old RR and Marty picked one. In a interview he said a team was on the phone with him. Also to further hurt my points, I believe this will save the panther close to 1 million cap saving if hes replaces JJJ. Im about real facts and not being "right".

If my only real issues are a mid 3rd and a late 6th, they didnt effect my overall approval much. BTW I do love UDFA Moore, I view him as a free draft pick and a 10% shot at being a 2022 starter.(he may need a season on PS) Nasty blocking was on Rhule and crew's menu. Brown, Moore, Tremble, and Christensen all had great highlights of taking the souls of defenders. I dubbed thee Nasty boyz 2021.

Hopefully we will need a long snapper more 3 times a game this season

Would you spend a 6th round pick to clear 900k of cap is ultimately what it comes down to 🤷‍♀️
