"The Panthers must truly believe in new QB Sam Darnold. After being tied to Mac Jones throughout the draft process, the Panthers passed on both Jones and Justin Fields to select cornerback Jaycee Horn eighth overall. The fact that the Panthers didn't pick up Darnold's fifth-year option until after the first round indicates there was a scenario in which they could have taken a quarterback, likely Trey Lance, who came off the board five spots before Carolina picked. The risk is that Darnold's contract is now guaranteed for 2022. Guaranteeing two years of big money last year to Teddy Bridgewater -- traded to Denver this week -- proved to be an unforced error by the Panthers, and they may have made a similar mistake again with Darnold."

1. No one in their right mind linked Mac Jones with the Panthers.

2. They didn't execute 5th year option not because they wanted a qb, but because it would have tipped their hand to potential trade partners.

Sometimes some people show their intelligence by trying to point out someone else's lack there of! Lol

Why would they excercise  the 5th year option on Darnold days before the draft? How does that benefit the Panthers or Darnold? Just have that conversation with Darnold to let him know why you are not doing it before.

AND i Mac Jones was rumored to be the third pick of the draft? Didnt hear much about him to Panthers. Especially after the Darnold deal.

Executing his option prior to the draft would have been supremely stupid. Even if they had every intention of not drafting any of the QB's in the draft no matter what, it would have been completely asinine to have used the option prior to the draft. This is is the dumbest of hot takes.

Like maybe they did have eyes on Lance, or were still on the fence about Fields or whatever, or maybe they hated them. It's all irrelevant and pointing to them not execising the option prior to the draft as some sort of proof is just dumb.

I don't care about the article or the hack sports journalist who wrote it I'm simply pointing out the fact that we pursued just about every option possible before Darnold so it stands to reason there was certainly a scenario where we could have still taken a qb.

The draft is done. Kind of weird now the boss is still making threads to generate content.

Posting football topics on a football forum to generate content is weird to you?

Doesn't seem weird at all.  In fact, it seems like exactly what an owner/operator of a football forum should be doing.

What's weird?  Going out of your way to criticize someone for posting football content on a football forum.  That's really weird.

They were always going to pick up the option. That's pretty widely acknowledged now.

I know some folks can't wrap their head around the Panthers commiting to Darnold (generally for no deeper logic than that they wouldn't have done it) but they did. It's pretty obvious to anyone who's paying attention.

Dunno. I think it’s quite possible they would’ve taken Lance and that could’ve been the reason for no 5th year option. Or maybe traded if someone wanted Lance - we will probably never know.

Multiple sources have confirmed we weren't interested in Lance. They felt like he didn't fit Joe Brady's offense.

Their not attending his second pro day probably should have been a clue.

While we're throwing shade at people who hold a different opinion, what's the logic behind "Sam Darnold is basically a rookie?"

I get the notion that everyone wants to buy in with this group now that the draft is over and we have moved on to the phase of all the rah rah lets go team stuff. But even the front office talked about how all options were still on the table. Whether they were just blowing smoke or being upfront it is a matter of opinion I suppose. But I support Sam Darnold and want the return to our winning ways the same as anyone else.

The fact that they had a couple of highly crowded prospects available, and passed on them, then executed Darnold's fifth year option the next day, ought to make it pretty clear to you the thing was a smokescreen.

If that's not an obvious enough clue, look at what they did in the draft and what they're saying about Darnold now.

Ask Rhule. He basically affirmed it.

Just out of curiosity, are you planning to be salty about them going with Darnold over who you wanted for the rest of the year or will you be letting this go at some point?

How else do you suggest conversations get started on a message board outside of people making posts and others commenting on that post?
