Franchise Quarterback

With TB being traded, and watching so many tear down the guy because he didn't live up to their expectations. With us signing Darnold and we all know how short his leash is with all of the highly paid fantasy general managers we have on here.. hopefully Sam can do what these players did in their career.

This is their first 2/3 year records as a starting quarterback. Glad we didn't live in a society that needs to have their instant gratification back then or we may have never seen their glorious careers..Not every new guy goes 13-0 Big Ben..

Montana. (2-5) first year, (13-3) pro bowl second year.

Jim Kelly. (4-12) (6-6) pro bowl (12-4)pro bowl

Aikman. (0-11) (7-8) (7-5) pro bowl

Peyton. (3-13) (13-3) pro bowl

Brees. (8-8) (2-9) (11-4) pro bowl

By today's standards, If they all were rookies now they would all be replaced with the next big thing. Not at all saying this about TB either. He sucks and sucked before he came here. How fast will it be til all 5 quarterbacks hit bust alert?? 4 of the teams will be looking for a new quarterback by 2024 draft. So much for a "Franchise Quarterback". Might be the dumbest saying I hear during the draft build up. If it were true, we should have a shift in football records more often.

You make some good points but you eventually lose support in that last paragraph.

The truth is there aren't 32 franchise QBs out there. Right now we're at a strong point in the QB game with maybe 1/3 of the league having what you could call "franchise" QBs. Rodgers, Mahomes, Brady, Ryan, Roethlisberger, Mayfield, Allen, Watson, Wilson, Stafford, Jackson. A few that could count as good and the rest holding place, developing or sliding out the last of their career.

The success rate is low, in general, for top end QBs coming right out of the draft, but we're also in a time when these guys have been given more coaching for a longer part of their lives than ever before. Some won't be able to transition into the big game and others will finally be failed by coaching after spending their lives growing from it. 

It's tough, but I think we'll see more than one of these top 5 make it. Two, maybe even three. But a few of them will be going to teams that have huge underlying problems and no QB could sort those things out, much less some kid straight out of college.

So, you're saying all of the great ones figured it out by year three.  Gotcha.  So we need a QB.

The problem with looking at "records" is that it doesn't necessarily tell you how they played.  You have to dig deeper than win/loss.

You need to identify QB's who were statistically similar their first three years to Darnold, then show franchise level improvement the next two.

Go ahead.  We'll wait.

You do know he's already played three seasons right?
