It’s one thing to trade the farm for a guy and another to take the guy that falls. I don’t see him falling to 8 anyway. Darnold could very well be the security plan for Fields not being available at 8. I like Fields a lot but sure as hell glad we didn’t give up 3 firsts for him.

If he is what you think he is why risk not getting him.. Especially at the QB position.. That means you might like the player but you're nor in love with him or forsure about him.

I think you gotta look at it from a L standpoint

 

1) If we traded all that draft capital for a higher pick to grab a QB this year and he ended up being a bust, we would be adding at least 1-2 rebuilding years.

2) If Sam Darnold is a bust (like he has been), we were able to draft BPA with picks we kept and are still in a better position (than last year) even without a franchise QB.

Our FO understands that we have to build a complete team and they've done a pretty good job so far. The moves may not be perfect but they were solid moves that will move this team in the right direction.

If Wilson fell to 8 I might believe we'd take him, but he's not.  

If one of those QBs falls to 8 it likely means Pitts and Sewell are gone.  I think there will be a bidding war for the remaining QB.  I've said it before but depending on who's trading with us and how far up they are moving.  We might squeeze out a 1st next year.  

If it happens that Darnold is not the answer we could package our 1st round picks and move up.

I know one thing.  I'll be happy when this draft is over.  I think this has been the strangest offseason I can remember.

Trading down is the absolute best move if one or more of Fields/Lance are available at 8. Get a pick in the teens, get a first round pick next year, probably get 1-2 additional mid-round picks in 2021 or 2022. You're on point that it gives Carolina the ammo to move up next year if necessary.

Trading with Denver probably only nets us an additional 2nd and maybe Fitts pulls a lower round pick just for good measure.  If we get down near Washington and New England.  I definitely believe we'll get an additional 1st. 

Definitely gives us more buying power in 2022 if Darnold fails.

If we were keeping Teddy Bridgewater as a backup and he was restructuring, I'd say no. But if Justin Fields or Lance falls to 8, you absolutely take them. 

Its very hard to find a GREAT talent at QB in this league. How is it that we're talking about teams trading up to take QB's but if one falls to us, we act like we got Aaron Rodgers. The hardest position in this league to get right is QB and healthy competition creates an environment that brings out the best in any athelete.

If Justin Fields or Trey Lance are there, you pull the trigger.

Agreed. Carolina will not get a 2022 first out of Denver to move up one pick, even for a QB. It will take Washington or New England (or Chicago or Pittsburgh, even) making a big move up.

It’s risk/reward. There is no such thing as a guaranteed franchise player in the draft, no matter how high we are on a prospect. We may feel that no rookie is worth 3 first round picks. Watson before the legal issues maybe, but no unproven rookie. If that player falls to 8, it is much less of a risk than 3 first rounders. Like someone already said, if he struggles we won’t be set back for the next 2 years with a first round pick.

Updated info on Fields' second pro day tomorrow...

Previously only two teams, the 49ers and the Patriots, were confirmed to be attending. There's now word that a third team will be joining them.

There was an absolute urgency to not have Teddy as our starter next year within the front office, that has been solved. Our draft board is completely open, QB is certainly a possibility.

Any idea/guess as to how our board looks. I’ve heard Pitts is at the top?
