On Monday Apr 5th, Hurney ordered a meatball sub from Subway like he always does. Spilled some sauce on his shirt.  The sauce made a pattern like an airplane as Marty tried to wipe up the mess with one of those tiny Subway napkins.

"An airplane? That's like a jet", Marty mumbles. "I wonder if the Jets have anybody worth trading with?  DARN IT, this stain isn't coming out.  Darn it.  Darn it........   hrm....  Darnold?"

That afternoon, fingers still greasy from the meatball remnants on his fingers, Hurney picks up the handset and spins the rotary dial. Once, twice, three times the rotary dial spins, making a satisfying "click click noise".

"Hello, this is 411. How can I help you?" says the operator.
"What's the number to the Jets locker room?"  Moments later, Marty is talking to the locker room janitor, who figures this is one of those prank calls he's laughed at on the Simpsons.

"What do we want for Darnold? Oh I'll play along.  How about a 6th, 2nd, and 4th?"  The janitor chuckles with himself for recognizing a prank caller, knowing that nobody would ever believe that was a real answer.

Marty shouts into the phone, "IT'S A DEAL!" and slams the receiver down back in its cradle.
He proudly puts on a fingerless glove, puts a feathered earring into his ear, and walks off into the sunset across the football field, raising his fist in the air with a sense of accomplishment as the soft strains of Simple Minds plays on his Walkman strapped to his fanny pack.

Trading up to three would leave us with Jones, Fields and Lance.  Wilson is going to be gone at 2 to the Jets.  Staying at 8 may leave us with one of them.   

I think they made the right decision on negotiating with the Jets for Darnold.  Though many think we gave too much for Darnold we have to remember they wanted a 1st for him.  We stood strong and got him for much less, plus we kept most of our draft picks for this year.  I am impressed with the negotiations and got him for a fair deal.

I just think that they were asking way too much (as the article said in so many words). That's a lot to give up, even during this time of QB scarcity drunkenness! It was too much, just like the Rams' payment was too much. Too much for our situation anyway.

That thought has crossed my mind.

LG is correct. If they were looking at trading up for the #3 pick, the plan would have been to draft a rookie. Even the article says part of the reason they didn't do it was because they hadn't finished evaluating the prospects.

In addition, seeing that Fitterer "balked" at what Miami wanted for that third pick, it raises the distinct possibility that even if we did want to push for Watson, some of the outlandish trade packages fans and some analysts speculated we were willing to give up might have been way way waaay off the mark.

(at the very least, I think you'd probably have to believe that the whole "any price" story was bullsh-t)

Throw in Fitterer's comment about leaving misinformation out there if it works to our advantage, and who knows?

I should add that I think the one narrative this story completely destroys is the idea that David Tepper was at any point standing behind Rhule and Fitterer cracking a whip and telling them to trade the farm, the kitchen sink and everything else for one player.

Truthfully, outside of his getting regular reports on how things were going, it doesn't sound like Tepper was involved all that much in this process at all.

Not too worried.  They wanted a first, and Fitts could have squeezed them--we seemed to have the leverage, but in the grand scheme of things, we gave up about 230 draft points to get him (if you devalue next year's picks one round).  230 points is nearly the exact value of this year's 3rd rounder.

2021, round 6: 12.6 points

2022, round 2 (if we finish in middle of the pack, #16):  190 points (third round value in 2021)

2022, round 4 (if we finish in middle of the pack, #16):  25.8 points (fifth round value in 2021)

So if we get a 3rd rounder in 2021 or a future 2nd for Bridgewater, it balances out.  even steven
