Panthers give Teddy permission to seek a trade

It would be moronic if we rush into cutting Teddy. For one, there's a chance a high profile starting qb for a competitive team will get injured sometime before the start of the season leaving Teddy as one of the few available qbs that could keep them afloat. Envision a team like Seattle losing Russell Wilson or Tom Brady's body finally breaking down in Tampa. You think those teams wouldn't throw a late round 2022 pick, especially if we restructure Teddy's contract to take some of the hit off them? Why eat $10 million extra and forfeit the chance at any pick at all unless you absolutely have to? Hell, I'd wait at the very least until the final cuts for the 53 before considering it.

Keeping more of his salary on the books and eating a roster spot is the exact opposite of what the team should be doing at this point. Darnold is going to be playing, if only to show what he has, and they were cool rolling with Walker and Grier last year, so they should do that again. No one is going to trade for Teddy in-season and expect to keep winning since he would have little to no insight into their system and he just isn't very good.  If he isn't worth anything now they will cut him.

What part of keeping him until final cuts did you skip over? Why cut him now when there's months before the season starts and plenty of time for someone to get injured? We're not paying his 2021 salary before week 1.

The Teddy experiment is over. The coach has made it abundantly clear that he wants nothing more to do with Teddy. He is a drag on the team at this point. He will be cut sooner rather than later.

He won’t be here that long if they don’t find a trade parter he will be cut way before training camp

Fair enough on the timing but no one is trading for Teddy and expecting to contend, and especially with no offseason in the system, and no one else is taking that contract to be average. The point about restructuring remains the same and the only motivation he would have to restructure is if it somehow made a trade to a team where he could start more palatable, but I'll be very surprised if another team makes the same boneheaded move that Carolina made with him last year... not gonna pay tens of millions to be average or worse.

I'm still not understanding why so many people are jumping at the chance to cut Teddy this second and lose an extra $10 million in cap space. In a world where Sam Bradford fetched a 1st round pick with a $20 million salary after a starter got injured, how is everyone so sure we can't get a late round pick, especially if we convert some of his guaranteed salary into a signing bonus? If we made $5 million into a signing bonus, the trading team gets Teddy for $12 million, we save $5 million extra on our cap (so $13 million post June 1st) and get a nominal draft pick in 2022. I mean hell, we could convert all $10 million into bonus money, leave him with a $7 million contract for the trading team, have the exact same cap hit we have now and at least get a draft pick, while the trading team gets him at a backup salary with zero guaranteed money, so they could cut him scot free. I realize you all aren't GMs but this is a bad look for some of you.

Ian just reported that multiple teams have interest, Im shocked..... Think Ian is doing Fritterer a big favor with this lie. He did say the contract has to get reduced and Teddy/agents already know. Looks for a role as a backup/mentor.

I think it happens in the draft for a late pick, after the contract is cut. Im Now 50/50 he will get a pick for the panthers, rather than cut. Ian be lyin tho....

Unlike Cam’s situation last year, Teddy is healthy and would be an excellent backup QB there is value there

Update: Multiple teams interested in Bridgewater as a backup; Bridgewater may help facilitate trade by reworking his salary

Also of note, Rapoport indicates Bridgewater was given permission to seek a trade before the deal for Sam Darnold actually went through.

What happens when Brady leaves? Darnold regresses back to being a bad QB?

Well he would have to progress to being a good QB first, but yes in their narrative our system and superior coaching will transform him into a SB winning franchise QB. Otherwise there is no good reason to bring him here and lose a 2nd, 4th, and 6th. For what? A backup? A one season and dump wing and a prayer? No. They're thinking Super Bowl winning QB in our system with our coaching. And what happens when Brady leaves? They think they'll find another talented OC with a superior system.

This is generally not how the NFL works. A QB who is bad for three seasons, has a weird hitch in his throw, and tosses interceptions like the t-shirt cannon guy is not going to (generally speaking) transform into Mr. Franchise Super Bowl winner. Can it happen? Yes. Is it likely? No. I'd like a crack at Kate Upton, but let's be realistic. It's not happening unless I win the lottery.
