Darnold part of the draft day strategy

FYI: Atlanta is reportedly getting multiple offers for the number four pick.

If there was any thought of dissuading teams from trading up, I'd say it's not working.

So says Atlanta. They are trying to increase the value/demand of their pick. If a team trades multiple first round picks for it then so be it. That’s why we locked up our back up plan. That still leaves 3 picks for Lance or Fields (whichever doesn’t go at 4) to fall IF there is even a trade up.

We are in a much better position than before. Either one of the guys we like fall to 8 and we draft him and can even let Darnold start until he is ready. If they all are gone by 8, we already have our backup plan and can grab a LT to protect him.

We are not taking a QB at 8.  It's over, stop with the dreaming.  It's more likely we use 8 on the best LT or trade back if they can get a good haul.  If a QB is sitting there they will easily get a 1st and 2nd,  making losing next years 2nd an after thought.

We're not going to pass up on a QB that falls to us if we like him as a franchise QB. That's not going to happen. Darnold doesn't change that.

I believe they went after Darnold because they weren't impressed with Fields or Lance

I don't think we expended future draft capital as a smokescreen. They believe Darnold could be the guy and they know Teddy cannot, so they made the trade.

I sincerely hope that they haven't put all their eggs in the Darnold basket and would pass on one of the top 4 QB's that drops(save them just not liking them as a prospect).

If you want to call it a smoke screen, it’s a smoke screen that actually has a fire behind it since I said it’s also hedging our bets in case a top four doesn’t fall to us. I don’t think they’d trade for him if they didn’t feel confident they could fix him

That's a 4D chess move if it's true.

Cost to move up for Lance/Fields would have been at least another first, probably more. Now if nobody believes we take a qb, we may get one for the cost of a 6, and future 2 and 4.

If Sewell or Pitts is there though, I can't see us passing them up.

I think it puts the Panthers in the best position to take the best player available at 8, or trade down. Darnold is probably not a long term fix, but he fits the system better than TB. And, there is a chance he turns out to be good (not great) and we keep him or trade him for picks at some point.

I doubt that, especially pertaining to Justin Fields. Rhule tried to recruit Fields at Baylor. I don't think Fields did anything during his college career to change Rhule's mind towards the negative. If anything, he would probably draft Fields if he somehow falls to us. Fields is presumably more ready than Lance who will need some more refinement. Maybe it's not that Rhule doesn't like Lance (or Fields), maybe he's on a little bit of a different timetable. Rhule obviously wasn't enamored with Teddy, but that doesn't mean he wants to throw away the season. He got a vet, albeit one with questions, that he perceives fits his vision better, bit I really don't think that will preclude him from taking his guy if he falls. And, honestly, I want to see that happen. I especially want Fields to fall. I don't believe we will pass on him.

To me he is our backup plan in case no other QB falls that we like and the capital is too much to go up and get one (thanks Niners). If one falls and we draft them no one will care about our 2nd next year and if they all go above us, we will be happy we traded for Darnold. It really makes sense. It’s like the GM that helped Seattle be a consistent, competitive team knows what he is doing...

^^^^This.  Since when did a 2nd rounder become the Holy Grail?  I mean over half the board was willing to part with our 1st rounders until 2024 to get Watson, but now somehow we have put all our eggs in one basket just because we shipped off next year's 2nd round pick?  The absurd logic of the Huddle never seems to astound me.

I’m glad they didn’t use a lot of eggs and the basket isn’t that big that we can’t get another basket and still have eggs to play with..

Exactly.. This move doesn’t hamper the franchise like others would have..

and reality is if Sam doesn’t workout you still may have the best or 2nd best Ot or CB in this draft and assets to play the QB game next year...

Cut it out, man.  You are using logic and you know that's not allowed around here.

The difference is that one is an elite QB and the other is one of the worst starting QB's in the NFL.

I wouldn't normally put a high value on a 2nd rounder bit we also have a bottom 5 roster in the NFL, so those picks matter. That is unless Rhule and Fitterer are idiots and then I guess this is all for naught anyway.
