Gunslinger or Game Manager

Before Homles? Roethlisberger was the last gunslinger to have much success in the modern NFL.  Even his game is more game manager. 

 

I want a quarterback that can make all the throws, accurately, and willing to push the ball downfield to take advantage of coverages. 

I really don't consider that a gunslinger.  Most gunslinger will struggle to have a completion percentage of 65%  I prefer higher than that.

In my mind a "gunslinger" is one who has the goods, knows he has the goods, and is not afraid to pull the trigger when the opportunity arises, and does it with success more times than not.  

I don't really think that definition is exclusive to gunslingers.

That's basically just a quarterback with confidence, and that can be true no matter what style of play you use.

Most successful and Superbowl winning QBs are game managers. A gunslinger like Favre won 1 Superbowl in his whole career with arguable good personnel. Brady has won a bunch with arguably mixed personnel. Some years great others not so much.

Nothing wrong with a game manager if he has the arm to take the top off when it’s there. I’d rather that than a bloke continually playing  hero ball into double coverage
