"I'll be shocked if it's not Mac Jones to 49ers."

So the fan and media view of Jones is not widely shared by the actual NFL talent evaluators?

Uhh I wouldn't be so sure. My guy has a 2nd round grade on Jones, as do I. I can confirm at least two teams do not have a first round pick on Jones. I can also confirm there are at least three teams that have Mac Jones as the third best QB in the draft. So it's a matter of personal preference.

That's not relevant at all.

In the case of ATL, they have a very old QB on the books, and a very expensive QB at that.  Draft Trey Lance, give Matt Ryan a year to teach and then cut.  Poof.  Trey Lance gets the time he needs and Atlanta get the QB they will need within the next couple years.

For Detroit, it's harder to pinpoint.  Yes, they have Goff, but do they believe in him?  I'm not sure they do.  As a Panthers fan, I certainly *hope* they do, but there are a lot of question marks around Goff.  Once again, same rule applies.  They can have their current QB teach for a year or even two, and then cut ties.  Fields as a regional player or Lance as a developmental player would go down well in the Motor City.

No way. You do not draft a QB at 4 to sit on the bench for 2 years. Ryan is 35 and a top 10 QB. He could play well for at least another 3 years and the way his contract is it would be super dumb to cut him before 2024. Then, the QB you just drafted would only have 2-3 years left on his rookie contract. Why would anyone want to rebuild that way? ATL is notoriously loyal. They are not going to just cut Ryan. He's the most successful QB they have ever had and he will retire there. Their problem isn't even on offense but defense. They might go offensive weapon at number 4 or maybe OL but they are definitely not going QB. I'm not buying that sell at all.

Isn't this usually the case? I'm not a scout nor an expert but I like trends. Seems to me that every season teams don't always draft on general evaluations but evaluate based on what they want to do.

So if I agree that Fields and Lance are more athletic, have better arms and higher potential but need to develop, and I have a team that's ready to win now and Jones has the attributes I want and will/can do what the play is designed to do, who do I bet my future on? The better prospect or the guy I think can do what I need him to do. My pick doesn't have to be the best player, just the best player for me. It's about winning. Marino was the best QB almost every season but Montana won 5 super bowls. The right player in the right system wins. Which would you prefer?

So you don't think they are trying to hide anything, you think all the Jones stuff is certain?

I am surprised he is such a polarizing guy. I assumed that the bulk would have him as a late first or 2nd round grade.

But....the teams at the top of the draft....well....

Not relevant?  Say what?  They cannot just cut Ryan next year.  Look at his cap hit.  It doesnt work like that.   By reworking his deal they essentially are making one more run with him and Julio and I would bet dollars to donuts they either trade out or go best defensive player.  No way they go qb and sit him for 2 years picking at 4.

I was just bout to say this, in the grand scheme it does them not much to draft a QB now when they got ryan 2 more seasons. They can approve the roster threw draft and try to compete now and cross the ryan bridge when it gets here. The cap hit to let him go now is way to big.

Uhh to be honest, not really when it comes to QBs. There is a sort of rotation between 1 or 2 QBs, but this class is a big mix.

Godfather Gil said some teams have fields as a 4th, im no fan, but 4th is jones 3rd overall bad..

First of all, thank you for responding to my post. I know you have a very valued opinion here and I value it too which is why I'm going to delve further. Perhaps I stated that wrongly, usually, there are few prospects that could go in the first but the order of those prospects are usually different per team.

I would much more prefer to hear your take on the rest of what I said if you have the time and don't mind as I do value your opinion.

After the initial surprise, I’ve come around on this one. Mac seems like a very good fit for Shanahan. So I can buy that.

I don’t see a defensive player worth the 4th pick, so if I was the Falcons I would go with Pitts, that would elevate Ryan for the next couple of years. Too early to go for a rookie QB for them, Ryan has at least 3-5 years less.
