Quarterback trade options

(I was tempted to use 'Will Grier' as a thread title since that seems to be a trend now, but thought better of it)

Word today that Patriot insiders are saying the team has decided not to pursue a trade for Jimmy Garoppolo. Reasons cited include everything from the 49ers stated desire to keep him (which pretty much nobody believes) to the team having spent too much money elsewhere.

With the 49ers trading up, each of the top three teams in the Draft now has a previous starter that looks to be on the block. Gardner Minshew (Jaguars) Sam Darnold (Jets) and Jimmy Garoppolo (49ers).

So if the Panthers were to decide on a veteran trade, which of these three would you make a case for?

(no, Deshaun Watson isn't an option; don't bother going there)

Why not wait until after the draft when the trade prices will plummet for the three? Or maybe the draft plays out differently than the spin doctors are predicting and we get a good QB?

Right now, everything is at a premium, it's a rotten time to shop. Everyone wants to act like those draft picks are burning a hole in our pocket and we need to throw them away willy nilly.

Because someone else might not.

It's kind of like saying "We'll wait until closer to the draft to call Miami about trading up to number three."

"Wait, what's that you're hearing?" 😳

Breer (MMQB) on Garoppolo...

And yes, the Patriots did inquire about Garoppolo earlier in the offseason. The Niners told them he wasn’t available. He still really isn’t. Why? It’s in the last bulletpoint. San Francisco believes it has a championship roster, and trading Garoppolo now would be entrusting those aspirations to a player it has, at this point, only seen on tape. The Niners don’t know for sure how the kid will come along, how he’ll learn, how soon he’ll be ready to start, etc. Remember, Shanahan sat Garoppolo for a month after trading for him in 2017 so he could learn the offense. And that was with a player who’d been in the NFL for almost four years. The quarterbacks the Niners are scouting now don’t even have that much collegeexperience (Fields started 22 games at Ohio State, while Jones and Lance started 17 apiece at Bama and North Dakota State.).

That said, I’d say Garoppolo’s availability is subject to change. My guess is, at this point, it’d take the Niners getting a first-round pick for them to even start in on trade talks and move off the course they’ve set. Now, if a veteran they can trust as a bridge quarterback becomes available, that could well shift their thinking. Or if we get to summer, and the rookie is way ahead of schedule, and/or a Sam Bradford-in-2018 situation arises elsewhere, that could change things, too. But for right now, Garoppolo is the Niners’ starter.

Also from Breer (same article)...

As for where Darnold could wind up next? I’d keep an eye on Carolina and Pittsburgh. Darnold would represent a worthy, and affordable, dart to throw at the quarterback board if the Panthers are convinced the quarterbacks they’d want will be gone by the time they pick at wight (and Atlanta having the fourth pick doesn’t help them). As for the Steelers, if the price is right they could see some similarities in how Darnold plays to how their own quarterback did in his early 20s, and throw Darnold in there to compete with Dwayne Haskins to be Ben Roethlisberger’s heir. Washington and Denver have also come up as possible landing spots, though I know each had some misgivings on his tape.

1. Minshew

2. Darnold

3. Garoppolo

In that order.

Minshew has a really good arm, can move, acts like a leader on the field when he’s not impersonating Joe Dirt. He’s also super cheap like 800k or so against cap, and we could get him for a day 3 pick.

Darnold isn’t a bad QB and has been in a bad system no but he has a higher cap hit than Minshew, would also probably take a Day 2 pick. He can throw the ball but he lets some absolute ducks go sometimes and when he moves he looks like he’s running on stilts.

Garoppolo has a large cap hit, would probably get him around the same price as Darnold since he would be such a burden on cap. I think he’s too inconsistent. Too much of a liability.

I agree, except big fat pass on Jimmy G. A; big ole cap hit to the tune of $26.4M this year and $1.4M dead money next year. B; injuries. C; he's gonna get cut anyway.

Regarding Darnold...

I'm all for sending our 3rd for Darnold at this point. Keep our 8 and either go Pitts, Sewell/Slater or Surtain II. In the 2nd we can grab a CB or OT (whichever we didn't take in R1) and have Darnold on a 1-yr prove it deal.

No current or future firsts given up.

No current or future seconds given up.

No future thirds given up.

We'd have a 24 year old QB under center without crushing our draft capital....and we still have Burns/Chinn/CMC.

I know folks are hesitant on Darnold, but look at his coaching staff since entering the league....

2020: HC - Adam Gase / OC - Dowell Loggains    Record: 2-14

2019: HC - Adam Gase / OC - Dowell Logaains    Record: 7-9

2018: HC - Todd Bowles / OC - Jeremy Bates      Record: 4-12

Darnold has risk, but it's a risky move that appears to be that balance of promise/potential/mechanics vs. need/weakness/cost. That situation in NY has been one of the worst with combination of players surrounding Darnold, as well as no running game, no edge presence and horrible coaches..... along with a bad energy within ownership/franchise.

Maybe Darnold for a 4th, Minshew for one of the compensatory 6ths.

Would rather grab a top prospect, a starter, and a prospect that could start after getting some reps in rounds 1, 2, and 3. Would also be super okay with picking up an extra 2nd round pick.

Daniel Jeremiah slots Sam Darnold into this year's draft pool and puts him at #3...

^^^ This exactly.  I wouldn't argue that point at all.  Of all the talking heads, Jeremiah one of the few I value their input.  What about Lance?  I know I will get asked that.  I would slot Darnold above Lance based on experience alone, but not on long term outlook.
