“If we’re gonna do something at the trade deadline, maybe one of the chips is one of our goalies. I can’t say which one.”

Figured  this deserved its own thread. I wonder which one?

Sorry, don’t got an athletic sub so can’t link more. Suffice to say. That’s a pretty strong statement. I think most people want it to be Reimer but I have a feeling it’s Mrazek. For what though is the question. A vet 4th liner is all we really need right now.

Nedeljkovic has really emerged, given this opportunity. Luckily you guys can hold three goaltenders on the roster this season. Is that the plan when Mrazek comes back?

Yes. I’ve said the luxury of having the cap space is to keep the three goalies. Nedeljkovic has been a great story — he won that championship down in Charlotte in the American Hockey League. But I’ve also said — we don’t have a lot of cap space. If we’re gonna do something at the trade deadline, maybe one of the chips is one of our goalies. I can’t say which one. It depends. But, you know, I think as you look at the way the schedule is and, hopefully going deep in the playoffs, you’d think you’d want to have three goalies. So I think this is a good problem to have, and we’ll find a way to keep three goalies on the roster if we need to.

This is it. I'd love to trade Reims. But, what would we're get back?

Mrazek would probably net us a nice haul. But, I'd much rather have The Remedy than Optimus come playoff time.

Ned should be out of the question entirely.

Not so fast, my friend.

Hear me out for a sec... Mrazek has been shelved with a significant hand injury to his glove side. A definite concern on 2 counts- nobody has seen him play since and nobody knows if he'll be the same. What team would be willing to take that chance headed into the playoffs, #1; and, #2, what do the Canes get in return for a goalie coming off injury who's had little playing time this season?

The Canes could actually get more for Reimer than Mrazek if they find the right trade partner:

TB: Vas is their #1, obviously, but McIlhenney is their 37 year old #2 who is a UFA at the end of the year and they have no #3 right now (injured).

Anaheim Ducks: 1 goalie right now, 1 injured and a #2 taxi squad guy. And their starting goalie a 40-year old, $1m contract and a UFA at the end of the year. And I'll take blue-liner Kevin Shattenkirk and his contract all day to replace Dougie.

So, you move a goalie, gain a $4M a year D to replace Dougie ($6M right now, probably wants $8M to stay).

Before I read the rest, and my counter point is Buffalo is apparently high in the mix for a goalie improvement. Both Mrazek and Reimer would be an upgrade however would either want to sign there after the season. Mrazek would be the longer term bet for them if he decides to stay and we could net ourselves cap space + a high prospect this draft in case *knock on wood* something goes wrong with an injury. Reimer would too but I don’t see us getting as much for him.

If it’s a rental for this season heading into the playoffs yes totally agree with you.

Reimer makes sense in the Anaheim scenario. I don’t see us moving anyone to TB, don’t want a disgruntled guy feeding them info, they’ve already cut their dead weight mostly in trades and as above expansion draft.

As for Dougie we offered 6.5 and he wants 8.5 but really wants to stay here so I could see us talking him down to 7.5 maybe even 7 if we give him a no move clause(though don’t know how many of those you can have active on a team). Getting that cap space now may be crucial. i was all aboard the moving on from Dougie cause he costs too much before this whole streak but he’s really trying to prove why he deserves the money. The 2 way game is the key with him though.

I am very curious to see what direction they go in. I value you them:

1. Ned

2. Mrazek

3. Reimer

I really hope they give Ned the start vs. TB Tomorrow... but throwing Mrazek back in there if he’s ready may be a much needed curve ball/focus tool for us.

I feel like reimer is gone after this season either way. But Mrazek may get us more in the short term if we are playing him to a non-playoff/goalie lacking team for the future. Which is the feeling I got from Dons statement.

Yeah, you can tell he is out to prove that $8.5 mil mark is deserved. He's gonna be hell to negotiate with in the offseason if he stays this hot.

I'd be down for this. 👍

The fact he really wants to stay according to sources from both sides is the only reason I think we may be able to talk him down. But we’ll also have to give him something else in return.

I'd love to keep him. But....eventually we are gonna struggle to pay all these guys.

    • it gets really weird.  But you got a straight shot down to Columbia and I guess straight up to VA if you are the Panthers.   I would assume the western mountains and western NC/SC ends up drawing a line and boxing them out of that area.
    • Here is how I do it--consider that most teams improve (at least on paper) each year: QB:  Can we say we improved here?  Bryce is trending up and we got him 3 weapons and no more protection.  WASH RB:  Adding Dowdy and Eteinne is a pretty significant upgrade.  UPGRADE TE: Adding a large TE with good hands and initial quickness over Thomas.  Tremble and Sanders should improve.   UPGRADE. OT: Ickey is improving each season and Moton (we hope) will be healed up and ready to go.  WASH OG:  No changes WASH C  : No changes WASH WR: Added the best WR in the draft, one that other teams tried to trade up to get.  Added Horn, and the Colorado WRs were scary good (making Shedeur look good).  XL and Coker will improve.  Lots to like.  UPGRADE In my view, we needed to upgrade WR, TE, and RB.  We did.  I am guessing that C and OT are on the table to be upgraded in 2026. Edge:  Nic and Princely replace Barno and Johnson and join Clowney, Wonnum, and Jones.  Strong room.  Biggest Need.  UPGRADE DL:  We get Brown back, so upgrade without doing another thing.  Wharton, Brown III are both upgrades.  Cam Jackson as a rookie NT---depth and size we did not have.  UPGRADE LB:  We added Rozenboom in free agency, and he was a decent addition.  I think we will add an UDFA.  I think our LB play will improve with better edge, DL, and S play.  SLIGHT UPGRADE CB: Horn and Jackson are back, both following their best seasons.  We added a CB (Devonshire) off the waiver wire and there are a few UDFAs who could actually make the team.  WASH S: Ransom and Moehrig will probably start, with Richardson and (maybe Nick Scott) as depth.  I think we are going to like these Safeties. UPGRADE We had desperate needs for Edge players, IDL, and Safeties.  We upgraded them all.  I am not happy with the ILB situation or CB depth. Special Teams:  Too early to tell. BASICALLY, ON OFFENSE WE UPGRADED WEAPONS IN 3 AREAS WITH 4 PLAYERS.  THE OL IS UNCHANGED. ON DEFENSE, WE UPGRADED DE, NT EDGE, AND S--4 AREAS WITH 4 DRAFT PICKS (edge, edge, safety, and nose) and  5 FREE AGENTS (nose, defensive end/DT, edge, corner, safety)  THAT IS A HUGE OVERHAUL, with starters at DE (2), NT, OLB Edge, and Safety--a total of 6 of 11 players who did not play last season (including D. Brown). We won 5 games last season.  I think we can win 8.5 if all goes well.
    • Thought it was a great draft overall. Only thing I probably would have preferred was Billy Bowman and Malachi Moore in the 4th. Wanted Tez, but Horn is a similar receiver type so good with it if they think he's a better fit.
