Luke Kuechly: Teddy Bridgewater 'understands it's a performance-based business'

The argument is his contract as a whole.

Eh....since he is a short term player, I would say his current salary holds the most weight. His cap figure has him the eighth highest paid(currently) in 2021. You really think he will produce at that level? It's the level he is getting paid.

I feel bad for Teddy. I mean damn, he seems like a great enough guy. He did his best. He wasnt good enough but he showed up and didn't complain and even after all these months of fans saying he is trash, he kept himself quiet and took it.

I for one salute you Teddy. May not have been a solution we needed but thanks for taking all of this with class. I guess when you get a big fat paycheck helps a lot, but there are many other divas in the league that would have made a huge stink of this situation.

This comment explains my sentiments perfectly. Ive been as harsh as anyone about teddy but his attitude and outlook should be applauded.

No I don’t. But if that’s the bar then he was ranked 18th last year we have a definitive answer - he produced at that level.

I just don’t think it’s as big a deal. So he signed a two year bridge wb contract. One year he played his worth. We suspect next year he will not play his worth. Then he is cut.

Big deal? Lots of players with massive contracts don’t play for their worth for the entirety. And those could be 4, 5, 6 year contracts. This is two. It isn’t franchise crippling.

He’s a bridge QB, was signed as such, and has played as such. Even if he isn’t worth 1 of his two year contract. In relation to players we’ve had and still have not being worth at least 50% of their contracts on longer deals it’s borderline relevant even getting mad over.

But people here act like it was this huge detrimental move this franchise made and it really wasn’t. I suspect it’s residual butthurt from the last QB.

He produced more in line with what he was paid last season but he will definitely not this season. He's an NFL backup caliber QB that is getting paid like a starter. That's a problem, no matter how you dice it.

It is a detrimental move, there is absolutely no question about it. It robs us of a large sum of cap money that could be either spent improving the team this season or rolled to next season to help us improve.

At the time it seemed more in line with what the market perception was of him. In hindsight, it was a bad signing. It's hard to spin it any other way than that.

If the topic is bad contracts and hindsight, TB is not at the top of the list.

In regards to rolling over, some cap wiz here will have to determine that - there are a lot of rules for that 4 year, 89% rule and the entire league has to spend a % rule. No idea if TB would’ve even mattered if someone crutches the math.

I agree though, if it were up to me I would’ve made Cam a lame duck and forced to play his last year personally. Why they didn’t do that, especially considering there were flames for doing him wrong anyways? Dunno. Respect maybe? Maybe Cam would have refused (plausible with his commitment comments)...but maybe not.

Who knows. But it is what it is.

Yeah, rolling with Cam would have been the obvious solution. At least if/when the decision is proven to be wrong, there is no more money tied up into it. Not sure who ultimately made the call to move on from Cam and sign Teddy, but he/they deserve a lot of scorn for those decisions. They will cost us this offseason and the next.

I don't think Cam would have had any issue playing. He really has never shown any inclination towards being the kind of player to hold out. He seems much more likely to be the sort of guy that bets heavily on his abilities.

But, this is a hindsight discussion, so those mistakes have already been made. As I said, I'd prefer to just simply move on. We basically know what we have in Teddy and we also know it isn't something that has any real future here. I don't think that is going to be a situation that is productive for the team over the course of a season.

Baseless accusations of butthurt sounds like an emotional reaction to a simple perfomance based discussion. It is salary cap space that could have been utilized beefing up the offensive line and adding another starting corner at the least. The argument you are presenting does not jive with reality. If the Carolina Panthers were willing to spend the kind of money they did on a quarterback do you believe they did not have the expectation he would be even a slight improvement over Allen or a deteriorating Newton? If all they were seeking was a placeholder for a year or two they could have achieved that for significantly less investment and addressed other areas of need to be ready for the next quarterback when the time came to hand off the reigns. The present day dilemma is that simple.

    • KC has a very good defense this year. It is 5th overall. Yes, still worse than last year, but their offense is considerably worse. Their passing D may be their "weakness" but they still allow fewer than 20 ppg. BY completed several deep passes yesterday, and he was able to threaten downfield in ways he didn't seem capable of before the benching. I'm not necessarily worried about his ability to connect deep anymore. What to me was impressive was that he did all this without a run game. We used the pass to set up what little running success we had. Wild.
    • Solid and fair assessment.   I will say, one of the big things I noticed yesterday was that he wasn't shy to step up into the pocket in the face of pressure.  He's trusting the IOL.  And they took care of Chris Jones yesterday.  We had clean pockets but also good success rate vs. pressure which just hasn't been the case with Bryce.   If he has more confidence the OL gets it done and he can navigate and step up for throws, that's huge.  It's one of the biggest things that's held him back.  He was previously bailing quickly and just too easily throwing away or making dead plays.     He was finding his 2nd to 3rd reads within structure/without bailing in the pocket.  That was nice to see, as much concern I have with him.  And the overall limitations will always be there. Time to back it up this week against the Bucs.
    • Suddenly the Cowgirls look like our best chance for a win remaining. I think the Bucs are playing better than the Falcons of late.  Our lone game versus the dirty birds is in the ATL where we always struggle.  The Cardinals are marginally better than I thought they would be. We are not beating the Eagles, they are starting to roll. I'm saying two at most, next week at home versus the Bucs and the Cowgirls.
