If I was a GM I would probably be fired within a couple years as I would probably be too much of a risk taker. I would end up taking a chance on this guy. I get a strong feeling he will either be boom or bust and nothing in between but if he checked out okay in an interview and seemed to have a good attitude and willingness to be coached I would take that chance.

His mechanics have got significantly worse with a year away from live action. Just watch the game he played last year. 

I'm all for taking Lance, but not with a Top 10 pick. He's such a massive roll of the dice.

Exactly.

Allen is the outlier - a QB that's gone away and significantly improved his mechanics. 

At such a technical position like QB, where you don't have time to think about your mechanics (because you're trying not to think about the 300lb man trying to rip your head off as you process the defence), it's very difficult to rework what at 21/22 is now very natural to you. 

 

To be fair to Lance, he has such limited experience as a QB that potentially his mechanics aren't ingrained yet, so you could stash him for a year away from said 300lb killers and rework what you need to.

Upside is great and all, but you have to get them there.

I never thought that we captured Cam's upside...at least not consistently...and I don't think that Lance has that type of upside.

That said, this is a much better front office and coaching staff than what Cam had.

Yep. Cam was a one of a kind. His rushing TDs as a QB is one of those records that's going to be really tough for anyone to break. He has more rushing TDs than some HOF RBs.

I'm in the minority here, but I didn't want Newton with the #1 overall pick.

After we selected him I thought we should have gone all in on the Auburn offence that he was so successful in.

Granted he'd be retired now, but he'd probably have a Super Bowl ring.

I'm honestly not convinced we ever made a legit (or any) effort to actually help Cam's mechanics.

Football fans sometimes act like guys that are missing old girlfriends.

We see an athletic quarterback and we say "Oh my gosh, it's Cam Newton".

We see a fast, undersized receiver and we say "Look, it's Steve Smith".

And yes, it's possible that someone could come out who's as good as those guys, but we need to be really careful about projecting.

More than one person said Ken Dorsey was more like a buddy than a coach, but look at what Dorsey's been able to do for Josh Allen.

I get the feeling that if we knew everything, we'd probably find out that the old regime was even worse than we ever knew.

We had the chance to really do something special with him, but we boofed it.

Mostly because of Jerry, Marty, and Ron.  They wanted an outdated football team, and Cam was more than willing.  The Panthers messed up their best opportunity over the last 20 years...but that's pretty normal around that headquarters.

Hell we blew the last 3 off seasons just to win 15 games over 3 seasons...or however many we did.

I 100% agree with this notion.

Ron and Marty did Cam NO FAVORS....however, Cam was part of that as well.  Lots of blame to go around over the past decade or so.

Again.. The stuff you can't teach he has .. (big arm talent, athleticism,  work ethic) , The stuff you can teach is on your organization.. If they can't then find ppl who can... No player in this draft is a finished product...

Agreed. We'd be even more pissed at the former staff and even more aware that we essentially wasted the career of one of the most physically gifted QBs ever
