Question for Bear Fans (re: Lovie)

Mr. Scot

It's a very valid point....IMO.

The best teams in the league have passing attacks. Some of them can run the ball as well, but not most.

The only top 10 teams right now that has a good rushing attack are Minny and Cinci...but all of them can throw the rock.

His points are valid. Spot-on really. The source is questionable. I'm sure even Rex is thinking.....jeezus dad, stfu.....

He's using the points to argue that the Bears could have just kept Rex and built around him rather than giving up a bunch of stuff for Cutler.

I felt from the beginning that the Bears gave up too much for Cutler, but I don't think I can go to the conclusion that it would have been better to build around Rex.

And I would add building around Orton would be a mistake.

Again, if you go on the assumption that Cutler could be the starter for 8+ years, the opportunity for building is a long-term open window.

I agree and disagree.

You gave up 2 firsts for him...that does not spell "building" to me. IMO that says he is all we need to put us over the top...ala Favre and Minny.

Not hating, just calling what I see from the outside.

If he can outgrow the mistakes, he could be very good for you guys, and if not, he has crippled the franchise for a while. Ballsy move no doubt.

I would have considered Orton a prototypical "old school" Bears Qb.

So do I take it that you agree with Papa Rex's notion that the bears should abandon the old "Monsters of the Midway" mentality and take on a more modern philosophy?

I think you can either run to set up the pass, or pass to set up the run.

In the days of the bone, the T, and the single wing (which is actually what Miami runs when everybody boners up about the "wildcat"), you could option way down the read to the pass, but it wasn't common.

Recently with rule changes favoring the offense and passing, it became easier to pass, so teams have responded accordingly.

I'm ok with that, you take what they give you and what you can succeed doing, but I am convinced you need to be able to do both.

At least be able to pose a legit threat in the running game.

I AM sick of the "we get off the bus running" mentality here, and the myth of the Bears stout defense. Just find a way to win dammit.

So I guess I would say yes, but with the uderstanding that good teams run the ball, stop the run, pressure the QB and win the turnover battle.......AND throw the ball. :D

In my opinion, 1st round picks are not worth the huge money shelled out for them.

You build teams in the middle rounds, and they have plenty of opportunities for that.

You are entitled to your opinion.

However, trading away 1st round draft picks is not a smart choice when trying to build a franchise.

Oh yea, outside of the top 10, first rounders are not nearly as expensive as people think.
