Josh Norris believes WR 3 is a big need this offseason

If you look at draft boards and first/second year WR production over the past couple of years, it's becoming apparent that the NFL's move toward more completely spread offenses has made it easier for WRs to transition from the college game.  If #3 WR is so important to Joe Brady's offense, we can still probably find a decent one in Round 3 or 4.  In terms of asset allocation during roster allocation, that's probably how you should be stocking your offensive skill positions outside of QB moving forward--with mid-round picks.

CMC can't replace a #3 WR but he can make that loss less impactful. Namely because CMC isn't capable of being a deep threat WR.

Hopefully we are able to sign or draft a guy that can provide that extra weapon that Samuel was.

Not sure I agree there.  I think you're correct that CMC will never be that "deep threat" that Curtis was, I'm just thinking "Do we care?"  You've got both DJ and Robby who are deep threats already, I think what you really need is that route runner who can win quickly in short to medium areas.  I feel like that has CMC written all over it.

I think Curtis was successful last season for a couple reasons.  First, his catch rate was literally eye popping.  Everything that came his way, he caught.  Whether that's sustainable or not isn't important to the concept in this discussion.  Secondly, Curtis was constantly drawing the opponents third or fourth corner depending on how they dealt with Robby and DJ.

Curious how you're seeing it.

Keep sleeping on Omar Bayless...you’ll see 😎

One more believer 😄  Great!

BUT, I also think there is a need for more receivers. The ones on the roster today are journeymen that might be good enough to be on a roster, but they wont become players who make an impact or become "good/great".

CMC would take some snaps away when healthy, Samuel is obsolete when CMC returns anyway.

Not sure that's accurate - Samuel had 10, 2, and 9 targets while on the field for 75%, 70%, and 76% of the snaps in the games that CMC played. There would be plenty to go around if the same overall mix was employed and someone like a TE didn't emerge as a major option.

If a new QB is starting come 2021 season than that may change, but it doesn't appear that CMC impacted Samuel's role much at all.

He'd have to lose some muscle mass, but he could absolutely be a deep threat at WR.

He runs away from teams.

Well, one of the biggest advantages of a typical slot receiver is being able to get separation on that nickel guy and beat people deep. Other than that, yeah, having that crazy catch percentage is huge.

I 100% agree on the sustainability because his contract year was an outlier. You ALWAYS have to be suspicious of those guys. We don't get to see him day in and day out in practice or with the team to know whether that is the product of really finally maturing(and for him staying healthy) or this was just the knowledge that this was going to be the year he had to put it all together to get his big payday.

Based on last year alone, Samuel was one of the best slot guys in the in the NFL. However, that hasn't been the case for his entire career. Losing 2020 Curtis Samuel will absolutely hurt us. The question will be if 2020 Curtis Samuel will be what we would see moving forward. He'll be an interesting guy to follow at his next team to see if he is a budding star or not.

IMO, CMC is an extra element for us but he creates a different kind of mismatch than a slot guy does. I would like to try and replace Samuel if necessary.
