Where's our cap going?

Linebacker and running back making top 5 percentage of the cap. This is why we suck. We need to start valuing positions heavier than those two.

Yeah especially when saints are still over 40 mil and I read they are looking at Golladay or Fuller at wr lol. But we are 18 mil to the good. Yeah the cap is a joke

Shaq carries a cap hit only second to Bobby Wagner.  That is flatly awful for an average player.

I was talking about his overall contract, not one specific year.  His guaranteed money is low after this year.  In fact, according to overthecap.com, the cap savings are 21 million in 22/23 if we cut him after this season.  And that may happen.

Shaq’s percentage is the most definitive of the group as I feel he’s the most expendable outside of Bridgewater who is obviously a QB and demands a higher salary.

He's an average LB, making top of the heap money...and not playing the most important spot in the LB corps.

Bad signing period.  Should have never inked the CMC or the Shaq deal.

What I really didn't like about the CMC deal was the timing. Unless he was threatening a holdout behind the scenes we had no pressing need to ink that deal when we did. Imagine how much stronger of a negotiating position we'd have with him coming off of an injury riddled year with a reduced cap number. Honestly, he'd probably be opting to play out his deal under the 5th year option and then we'd still have the option to franchise tag him in '22. Honestly, that's probably the smart play with a 1st round RB. Let him play out his rookie deal, franchise him if he's elite, possibly franchise him again to get 7 seasons out of him then let him walk and let someone else give him a long-term deal with big guaranteed money. He'd still only be 27/28 years old. You definitely don't give a guy huge guaranteed money one year after running him into the ground. History shows that seasons with huge numbers of touches are really unkind to RB longevity.

I honestly think he proverbially held the gun to our head behind the scenes. That's the only way that contract and the timing of it makes any sense at all.

As much as I love CMC - and I really think he's a HoF waiting to happen - what you're saying here really is the smart play.  You get what is likely the best seven years of the career without a lot of year over year risk.

The only reason I don't have a huge problem with the contract is that I suspect CMC can become a third down specialist late in his career if the knocks start to add up.  I do agree that we'd be paying a lot for a specialist like that, but maybe that's what it took to get him to stay.  Who knows.

CMC is definitely a very tough call.

Imagine signing that runninback to a monster extension when he still has 2 years left on his rookie contract. Sure we wouldn't be so dumb to do that, right ?
