I'm not sure that we know what he is. We know what he is under Nagy, but I'm not so sure that Nagy isn't another Gase.

All I'm saying is that it's not difficult to imagine a scenario where Trubisky ends up being our best bad option or a decent stop gap for say a Trey Lance. If you draft Lance I don't think you can plan on him being your day one starter. Maybe he proves that he can, but I wouldn't want that to be the plan.

I think the story for Trubisky has largely been written, but perhaps he is an outlier.

I agree about Lance but I still don't want to be paying another backup caliber QB a big contract.

The scenarios probably don't work out to even sign him, in all honesty. I can't see us spending big on a QB if we cut Teddy or if we keep Teddy. I am skeptical of being able to trade Teddy.

Maybe we will have more of an idea about the direction we will go when free agency starts.

I just don't see $8.5M as "big" at QB. Teddy was a middle of the road paid QB at 3 years/$63M/$33M guaranteed. I wouldn't want to give Trubisky anywhere near that but $8.5M? Sure. There's also a decent chance he shows enough to get signed elsewhere and then ends up factoring into the comp pick formula the following year.

That would be a top 5 backup QB contract last season. I don't see any reason to pay that for him. If we had cash like the Jags or Colts or Pats....sure. But we don't.

Insurance. You caught up on this backup idea. That's the plan IF everything else works out. Everything very well may not work out.

I am caught up on the money plus I don't really view him the same way you do. I view him as a better backup option than Walker and Grier but not too much more than that.

I don't view him as capable of starting for an NFL team for more than a couple of games a season. The Bears just didn't have a lot of great options.

I am primarily caught up on tying up that kind of money on a subpar player. With that $8-9 mil, we could get some serious help on the OL or in the secondary.

I just can't envision being able to justify spending that on a player of his caliber.

I get it. I'm just looking at a significantly more talented QB than Teddy at a significantly reduced price point.

So you don't think with capable coaching, weapons and system he can turn into at least Steve Beuerlein?

If we can magically get out of Teddy's contract via a trade, I am probably not as caught up on the money. I don't know that he would ultimately be better than Teddy but we would get to see something different at least.

Trubisky is largely bad but when he is clicking he can put on a show. I guess that would at least give you 2-3 good games a year to watch versus the 16 straight check-down-a-thons.

Trubisky is also a lot more likely to net us a top 5 pick, so there is that. I guess we could try this tanking again.

It is possible. Steve was technically a journeyman backup that had his peak in Carolina. That isn't a bad comparison, as I view Trubisky as a career backup.

I mean Stevie B was the top passer in the league one year for us.

Wasn't it over 4k yds?

It was. He also had another 3700+ season for us. But, he played in the NFL for 14 years and only had 4 years over 2500 yards passing. 3 of them were with us.

Still think he was the second best QB in franchise history(no disrespect to Jake) but he never reproduced those results anywhere before or after us.

I don't know that I see that in Trubisky but he was given a lot more opportunities than Steve was early in his career. Perhaps if he does have that sort of peak it could be in the next few years.

I've got them

1.Jake

2aCam

2b Steve

I'm sorry but Jake while he was healthy was magical. Made more big plays with his arm than the other guys.

(I don't rank QBs based on longevity or running abilities.)

The gulf between Cam the other two is very wide. Cam was an elite NFL player and league MVP. Jake and Steve were great stories and fine QB's bit none of them ever dominates the way Cam was able to. Teams had to game plan around him.

Cam couldn't throw.

He really couldn't. The reason we went and got Benjamin and Funchess is because he was constantly air mailing guys especially deep outs.

He was just a bad passer especially in clutch plays. He constantly came up short at the end of games when he had to have a completion.

Great football player. Great running threat. Slightly above average passer. He did have a cannon.

    • One has a proven, offensive-minded, Super Bowl winning head coach along with a top 5 OL + defense. He's being protected and getting the ball back not having to chase the other teams. The other had Frank Reich + Thomas Brown their rookie year with a bottom 5 defense as well as a bottom 5 OL that gave up the 2nd most sacks against a rookie QB ever. The sophomore season is being ran with a top 5 OL but also with a rookie HC (that has just one year of OC experience) and a bottom 5 defense still. The Broncos defense has allowed over 20pts just three times this season (26 vs. SEA (L), 23 vs. LAC (L), 41 vs. BAL (L)). Meanwhile, the Panthers have had ONE game where the defense gave up less than 20pts (vs. NYG (W)).   I'm not sure how folks couldn't expect Bo Nix to statistically perform better given their incredibly different situations. With that said, I didn't expect Nix to keep ascending as impressively as he has this season. Hopefully his arc will give other older college QBs a better shot, especially given the recent media blitz against the NFL regarding how development of the QB position in the league seems to be non-existent. Hopefully Bryce continues to improve as well, of course.
    • “You can learn a lot in 10 games,” Nix said. “[I’m] still learning, still growing, but just finding ways to execute the play that’s called, no matter what it is: run play, pass play. It doesn’t matter. Just finding the right way to go with the ball.” To that point, Nix noted how his developing partnership with head coach Sean Payton has helped Denver’s offense get to the next level. “To be honest, I think at the beginning, you kind of make the NFL bigger than what it actually is,” Nix said when asked where he feels he’s made the most strides. “These players are really good, but at the same time, you have really good players on your level. I think simplifying the game, trying to play as fast as possible, and finding a completion, which is what we’ve been able to do here recently. “I think as we’ve gone on, Coach and I have found a good rhythm of what we both like, what we can kind of put out there on the field, and what we can execute. Then the guys have kind of adapted to it, found our roles within the offense, and executed at a high level. It’s just all about slowing the game down and processing things in a manner that you can handle. Just kind of see one or two things, and let those guys take you to where the ball is supposed to be.” -Bo Nix From what I'm gathering regarding Bryce, the Panthers entered this season with a reset mindset. It's Young's rookie year, which explains the benching. Now, we're beginning to see the development of Canales and Young's offense. Slow development but we're winning 😃
    • Bix has more tds through his first 11 games than bryce has his entire career....no comparison at all he made amazing throws during his first games his decision making just keeps getting better.  Young does not have the physical ability ro make the rhrows bo makes
