Seattle gave Wilson a record breaking contract.  While Wilson is a great QB (A fact many Panther fans refuse to acknowledge) Seahawks reaching the Super Bowl twice was in large part due to a dominant defense and running attack.  Today, Seahawks have neither and that is in large part to misallocation of assets (money) forcing them to go cheap in areas of need.

They lost five hall of famers and couldn't replace them bc they drafted poorly and couldn't replicate the drafting (Russ the LOB drafted outside of first round except Thomas) and good FA signings (Lynch) that got them there in the first place. Thats not due to the contract.

Poor drafting is part of the problem, misallocating assets is the other.

Drafting a franchise QB on a relatively cheap contract and surrounding him with talent is still the best strategy because most QB's aren't going to do a Tom Brady.

Well yeah. But Deshaun is the one dude worth taking a risk on trading first round picks on bc of his unique situation, age, and talent. Plus he's a marketing dream in Charlotte so Tepper would pay for him. He can afford it and we draft well enough to risk three firsts and a player if that's what it takes. Hurney ain't here anymore.

There are a lot of good reasons for Watson to hate the leadership in Houston, but how tolerant do you expect him to be when the Panthers fail to surround him with talent?  That is the road the Panthers are going down by taking on Deshaun's huge contract while giving up several high draft picks for multiple years and several key players to boot.

Panthers new management was brought in specifically because they could create a championship team from the ground up over the course of several seasons.  Now we are betting the farm on a single player at the end of year one.

Sounds like fans were sold a bill of goods.

You absolutely can if you are well run, like the past few SB Champs. Players aren't gonna be turning down deals bc they're worried about acquiring other talent, not when it's the organizations job to do that anyway. Wilson got paid and they haven't drafted well since, plus they lost their best players who were hall of famers.

Mahomes was still on his rookie contract.  The other teams were led by Tom Brady.

And even Tom Brady got tired of taking less to improve the team and forced his way to TB. Plus Mahomes is gonna get there again and again and he's gotten paid. He made the superbowl the first year of his extension and the chiefs also found a way to retain their best players. It can be done, we have the talent ALREADY to support Deshaun, esp on offense. I'm not sure why you're so scared to spend someone else's money

I also explained why drafted first round picks isn't better the farm, considering the bulk of the farm will still be here. We aren't trading the entire draft AND our best players for Watson, at most it'll likely be three firsts and two players. That can be replaced and supplemented by Teppers wallet and good drafting which our current regime seems to be doing.

In closing, if the Panthers can find a way to land Watson without losing DJ, CMC, Chinn and Spider Burns and the cost is mainly first round picks, they will be able to sign free agents to offset the losses (Tepper has made it clear he wants to win now)and since they scouted the senior bowl they'll be able to draft the best offensive lineman from it and build depth in the draft they could be a playoff team sooner than we think. Teams go from worst to first every year, we've done it plenty of times with worse coaching, and a qb like Watson makes that much difference with the type of skill talent on deck here (four thousand yard players with a marginal QB like Teddy). All of whom are young and still getting better.  Dare to dream, this is just sports.

That being said Watson is the only guy worth trading that price for bc of his age and talent. The draft is the way to go otherwise.

What we believe will happen and what we know has happened are two entirely different things.

What we know has happened is that Mahomes was on his rookie contract and that KC had already built a playoff caliber team before Patrick became a starter.

Again, we know Tom prioritized winning championships over getting record breaking contracts. Also, Tampa had already built a talented team of top draft picks thanks to years of failure before Tom Brady ever arrived.

Breaking the bank and giving away the farm for a franchise QB prior to building a strong core of players is the Exact Opposite of what the "last few winning Super Bowl teams" have done.

    • I think it will be hard to not go edge in the second if we go QB first. Say you have Starks, one of Bond/Egbuka, and maybe one Edge (don't have a name to throw out that is end of 1st round projected and may slide)... do you still go Starks? Just curious. I haven't looked into starks much, as I've been focused on QB, WR, and DL prospects.
