I don't know about that. He didn't hit him from behind, and the contact was literally within Greenway's breastplate.

It would be called an illegal crackback block 10 times out of 10. That doesn’t change the fact that Smitty was a bad ass.

Depends on if Steve smith was in motion before the snap or not. Steve’s area of contact is 100% legal since it is below the shoulders.  If smith was In motion pre-snap and coming back toward the QB ... then yea it was illegal. However, if smith was out wide at snap and the play just came his direction organically, it’s a legal block.

“a player initiates a block in which he is moving toward or parallel to his own end line and makes forcible contact to his opponent with his helmet, forearm, or shoulder.”

It was definitely towards his own end line to meet the definition of a blindside block.

Illegal (by today's standards...perfectly acceptable at the time) or not, it was bad ass. I might make it my screensaver.
