But getting tagged as a RB is about the worst position to do that to as the theory is to not pay or commit long term to them. So I agree he wouldn't do that during his rookie deal, if he got tagged I could see it happening. Regardless it didn't happen so we are debating a hypothetical situation that didn't happen lol 

True. He will never be looking at a franchise tag the rest of his career. Nor will he ever be looking at top RB money again. 

Hurney got us. It sucks for the Carolina Panthers but CMC will make out like a bandit, no doubt about it.

Im not overly disappointed in it at the end of the day. The 'smart thing' might have been to let him walk but could you imagine this team without CMC after everyone else we lost? Plus, if we do get a rookie QB then a pass catching RB is their best friend. 

By the time the new QB is off their rookie deal CMC will also be off his, so his salary will not really be a major hinderance to the roster building process. We can say we over paid for positional value but its not really 'hurting' the team.

Of course I can imagine it. It happened last year. We were actually pretty good offensively still. We rushed for 1704 yards, 19 TD's and a 4.2 YPC average in 2020 and 1819 yards, 20 TD's and a 4.7 YPC average in 2019. It really wouldn't have been the end of our offense. When he went out, a lot of his receiving load just went to Davis and Samuel. Are those guys as good as CMC? Of course not, but we didn't fall off a cliff either.

And Mike Davis has 59 receptions last year, so I don't think we would just stop throwing to the RB if CMC wasn't here or doesn't play. The biggest blow to the team is basically the contract size. If he remains here for the rest of his contract, he will likely consistently be in the 4-6 paid players on the roster and that is taking away cap space for much more valuable positions(DE, WR, OL, etc). 

I suspect he will probably end up not making the end of his contract, however, so we may indeed avoid the bulk of the worst cap hit years(2023/2024). Or, perhaps he produces at an elite level for the remainder of his contract and that will work, as well.
