The Hurney restructure. We're planning to use this money on something. There's no reason to do this if we don't need the space this year.

We have about 23(Teddy included) Starting/Key Backup/Rotational Spots to fill this year so ya we need cap space.

Concerning this year's cap space, I think they're are trying to open up enough that if they were somehow able to pull a trade with Watson, they could absorb his cap hit AND still be able to make some other moves to improve the team.  If they don't open up space, they might only be able to do one of those two things.

Any way you look at it Pre June 1st trading CMC for Watson we wouldn't have enough space for that deal even now. In fact we'd be about 10 million on the negative there. So even with these moves if CMC is in the deal we can't do a Watson trade. Without CMC in the deal right now, It might be possible to get Watson but we'd lose at least Samuel and Moton(unless we get him cheap this year with a backloaded contract, tag isn't possible in that Scenario). Plus we'd still have 15-20 spots to fill and single digit cap numbers to do it.

I wouldn’t mind a one or two year extension for him. I also wouldn’t mind letting him walk after this year so either way it’s fine. We seem to be aggressively eating dead cap last year and this year with kk so this does not hurt that bad. Between Boston and this we are sitting at around 6.6 dead cap next season for both.

yeah--we can handle the dead cap money next season (if that is what happens) more than now.  Good point about eating dead cap last season.  You get the feeling that this is the year we make a move.

I would like to point out this-(and I don't think it is the case, but it should not go ignored)--

What if we are creating cap room to sign some veterans to replace traded players used to move up with the Dolphins, for example?   So we package CMC, Thompson, and three first rounders to trade with Miami.  We have a QB on a rookie deal (Fields, for example) and we have cap room in what should be a buyers market in free agency (more players being cut to get under cap, less $$$ teams have to spend).  Now we can grab a LT in round 2 and shop for veterans in free agency to fill other needs (CB, LB, G, for example).  In rounds 3-7 we can draft a S, Slot WR, and some depth OL.

Just a different look.  Remember, Tepper (if he is providing guidance at all) made money as a hedge fund manager--they look at the world differently--from the underside of Wall Street--so maybe that is in play.

We will know well before the draft if Watson is available and if we got him.  Regardless of that outcome, clearing cap space in a productive manner allows you to be aggressive in the draft as well.

Seriously--having cap room this year in free agency is smart. First, more players will be cut to get teams under the cap--there will be many more solid veterans out there for this reason--and less $$ on the table because the cap dropped.  In theory, we could get some talent in March, filling many needs.  But this is correct--Short, Weatherly, and Palardy were all dead weight.

The Panthers will have close to $100 mill in cap space next season, with them being relatively tight this off-season it makes sense to push some money into future years.  Remember the cap can always be manipulated, the Saints have been doing it for a decade.

Saints been doing it for the past few years. now there -69 million in the hole and losing the majoirty of there team....how they manipulated the cap ill never know.

Translation:  We need a LT, G, and G.  Re-sign Paradis (done), tag or give Moton a new deal (hopefully) and re-sign Miller in free agency (cheap, decent G who knows Moton and Paradis--communications are very important for the OL).  That leaves a LT and LG.  What is up with Daley?  We talked about re-signing Scott, who was decent in relief of semi-retired Okung.  So we are closer than needing 4 shiny new hogs.

And for those who say the OL was good last year, I would like to take this moment to say, "They surpassed expectations because there were none."  Reed was terrible at LG, giving up A gap frequently and often whiffing on pass blocking DTs--think about that.  Not a speed rusher--a DT.  LG was terrible.

Part of the reason this is true is because there are fewer players under contract after this coming year.  Every single NFL team has more cap space the further you look into the future.  You can't just look at the number in dollars; you have to evaluate that against how many players are on your roster.  $100MM with only 30 players under contract isn't good.  You'd rather see a $50MM is you had 45 to 50 players under contract.

So while what you said may be true, on general principal, I wouldn't necessarily want to be "kicking the can down the road" with guaranteed money unless you truly, truly needed the space in any given season.  That's partly how Hurney got us in trouble (his initial contracts were a bit of a problem too of course).

Exhibit A:  Look at the Atlanta Falcons cap space the next couple of years.  Then compare the number of players going into their "top 51" vs. everybody else's, especially those who appear to be in worse cap shape.

Spoiler alert: Some teams below them in cap space are in better shape than they are.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but by converting the base salary to signing bonus, they are basically taking the amount converted and spreading that out against the cap for the remaining year of the contract.  That's the mechanism by which the conversion saves cap space this year--by pushing some of the money that would have applied this year into future years. Which in essence means it would be harder to cut him next year because there's now additional dead cap space that we'd incur.

Sounds to me like the staff is either pleased enough with his play to keep him, or they really are concerned about continuity on the offensive line; cutting Paradis would mean they'd have to replace four starters on the line (assuming they tag Moton). On that last point, honestly this move may be part of their efforts to generate enough space to extend Moton long term.

Yes and no. You're correct if by cutting him next year, you actually meant this year. His contract is up next year. We only have this opportunity because the contract has dummy years on it to lower the cap hits of the last couple years. This move essentially commits us to keeping him for his last year because now cutting him doesn't save us any money since it nearly fully guarantees his contract. The benefit is we save money this year when the cap is depressed and push some of the cap hit to next year when the cap is expected to go up and we'll have plenty of extra space. Smart move if we're sure Paradis is part of our 2021 plans.

    • Tetairoa McMillan.   The last 28 1st overall picks were either a QB, DE, or OT. Seeing as I don't think we'd take an OT in the 1st and give up on Ickey as an LT yet and there doesn't seem to be a clear overall #1 type of QB or DE pick this year, it very well could be a non conventional #1 overall this year, at least in regards from the last almost 3 decades of drafts. If we didn't have Horn, I'd be more open to Hunter as a CB at #1, but we have him so another CB wouldn't be how I'd use a #1 pick.  And as much as I love Legette, if we have SB contending aspirations, I don't think Legette is a #1 on a team like that, but he damn sure is an elite #2 on a team like that.  He's more of the Smith/Higgins/Waddle to Brown/Chase/Hill (in terms of role/impact, not style of play of course). T-Mac is going to be the top ranked WR on every team's board in the end.  He is going to be a true outside #1 WR who is viewed as a consensus Top 5 WR in the game by his second contract in the same way guys like Jefferson and Chase have done.  His height combined with his speed, athleticism, and hands are near impossible to find all in one player, there is a reason his generally used comp is Mike Evans (although as he's not as thick, I personally see him more as an AJ Green). Yes, as an Arizona alum I've admitted to having bias towards the player to begin with.  But he's also someone very widely being put into the Top 5 in mock drafts lately and most of them have him as the first non QB offensive player being taken, so it's not really THAT much of a homer pick on my part anyways. If a QB or DE truly separate themselves as being a can't miss prospect come draft day, I'm open to that discussion, but until then, or if it doesn't happen, T-Mac is my pick 100 times out of 100.
