Panthers open more cap, working Paradis's deal

Next year is the 3rd year of his 3 year deal.

Spotrac has two additional years listed, but says they are 'dummy' years that automatically void and carry $3.6 MM of dead cap--and that's before today's restructure, so I don't know the new dead cap number.  Honestly, that seems really weird, so I don't know exactly what's going on with the contract.

Why creat future guaranteed money though unless you need the space currently? It makes no sense unless you need it now.

I think they are doing this in an attempt to get Watson or someone else. If available we have it, if not and we don’t use it we can always roll it over. It’s a low risk move that will help If we are able to get who we want

I would take either. If Cowboys tag Prescott we would only have to give up two firsts right?

Two firsts and match the contract and Dak has to agree to come here over Dallas.

I personally think this is what WFT is planning to do.

Part of the reason this is true is because there are fewer players under contract after this coming year.  Every single NFL team has more cap space the further you look into the future.  You can't just look at the number in dollars; you have to evaluate that against how many players are on your roster.  $100MM with only 30 players under contract isn't good.  You'd rather see a $50MM is you had 45 to 50 players under contract.

So while what you said may be true, on general principal, I wouldn't necessarily want to be "kicking the can down the road" with guaranteed money unless you truly, truly needed the space in any given season.  That's partly how Hurney got us in trouble (his initial contracts were a bit of a problem too of course).

Part of this is true also, and mostly is dependent on the QB position.  If the Panthers end up taking a rookie QB, with Teddy inevitably off the books the Panthers will ultimately still have a lot of cap room next offseason.  You have to also assume that at minimum 3-4 of this years draft choices will be on the roster next season also for cheap. Plus the bottom of the roster isn’t typically expensive.  You churn that out year after year.  Basically the Panthers even with a trade for Watson and some major signings will have plenty of space to do whatever they want next season so I still don’t see why they wouldn’t open up some more space this year by pushing some money down the road.

Two options for this cap space and both are with the understanding we're trading some draft picks this year.

1.  We get our vet QB - Watson, or Dak as the darkhorse.  Need the space there, also could use some to again bolster the OL.

2.  We're shopping to fully rebuild the OL, with the knowledge we're trading up and bringing in a rookie QB.  Want to create the best space for them, which means a solid OL is needed.  Moton/Paradis/sign a LT with this freed up space and then fill in the gaps in the mid rounds of the draft.

Obviously some of the shopping could be coming on the defensive side of the ball, but I just have a hard time seeing us spend capital on LBs and Safeties when our OL and QB positions are the most dire needs.

It’s what we have not been used to under Hurney - fore-thinking and preparation.

This doesn’t mean anything is going to happen. All this means is they’re preparing be able to be involved in anything that comes up. But really, they’re cutting poo players and restructuring poo contracts, that’s just what smart franchises do.

    • I think it will be hard to not go edge in the second if we go QB first. Say you have Starks, one of Bond/Egbuka, and maybe one Edge (don't have a name to throw out that is end of 1st round projected and may slide)... do you still go Starks? Just curious. I haven't looked into starks much, as I've been focused on QB, WR, and DL prospects.
