ESPN Predicts Watson to be the Panthers starter in 2021

Look at the history of Carolina 1st round drafts.  The only three year span that you can argue was worth more than DeShaun Watson were 2011-2013 with Cam/Luke/Star.  Only other span with even an argument is 2010-2012 because of Cam and Luke.  Note that Watson is a much better QB than Cam.  Even Morgan/Peppers/Gross isn't worth as much as DeShaun.

Exactly.  I mean, im not going to pretend to completely understand the NFL salary cap - there are people smarter than me employed by the team to manage these things....but on its face, trading CMC this year seems a like a non-starter.

CMC, Burns, Brown, Matos are the players that would cost us cap space as well as dead money. Burns being the least with 4  Million dead and only 240K cap hit.

>>Everyone wanted to hear what Rhule had to say on the matter, and he wasted no time addressing it.

"I know there will be a lot of questions about Cam (Newton). My son keeps calling me asking me questions, so I figured I'd address that right off the bat," Rhule said.

"From my perspective, I'm unbelievably excited to get to work with Cam. Coming from the outside, you kind of know as a fan, but just on a personal note getting to know him, he is a diligent guy. He's working so hard both in Atlanta and in Carolina to get himself healthy. You meet him, he's this massive man, impressive man, and I've really enjoyed getting to know him. I've enjoyed getting to sit down in the cafeteria when he comes by, sit down in my office. I think he's doing a great job. For me, the way he balances being a great father, the way he balances being a great quarterback, and the things he's done in the community are really, really important. I want to make sure I say that. I'm excited to get him healthy. Obviously, that's the number one goal for us. He's doing a great job of doing his part. We have to make sure we're doing our part as we try to get him healthy for the 2020 season."

OK then. Certainly a strong statement in support of the former NFL MVP.<<

Again, a press conference talking to the media (not directly to Cam himself behind closed doors) as he was taking over the team without the chance to really evaluate anything. He did not meet with Cam and promise him anything individually, and certainly didn't lie to his face to get him to sign a new contract.

Houston met Deshaun face to face, made promises to get him to sign a new contract. These promises were made because Watson was upset over the stupid Hopkins trade, they tried to smooth it over. Then a year later, yes they talked with Watson, but then went against anything Watson suggested. I mean, they didn't even interview or attempt to speak with who Watson suggested. If you promise, then ask, you at least need to entertain and give the perception that you listened by at least interviewing.

Totally different circumstances, not even comparable.

I 100% agree that he isn't on Rodgers level yet, but I also agree that Watson is just behind Mahomes in value. When talking value, age is a factor, and being 12 years younger is more valuable than the difference playing level at this point.

I agree which is why I threw in his injury history. Couple that with (I think) he is the most sacked since he entered the league. There’s just a ton of variables... age is definitely one of them. I just know if you said next 3 years I’d prefer Wilson, Rodgers, or Mahomes. But yeah you say 10 years and that conversation changes.

You list no empirical data to arrive at these conclusions. You also willfully omit the fact that drafted players have a relatively minimal cap hit as opposed to veteran, top-tier QBs.

1/10.

It is. Though very few seem to understand even the basics of the cap and we have several neat little online tools which spell it out. And it's really not that complicated. The only way it's a possibility is to wait until after June 1st. Which isn't going to happen if they even trade him.

I think the longer the Texans try to stop Watson from leaving the worse off they’ll be.

(1) once the draft approaches and happens, teams will have made their plans at QB and will have obviously used their picks. Less teams in the mix. Less immediate value.

(2) they will be the ones feeling the pressure to move him as time goes on. He’s said he’s willing to sit. Look at Carson Palmer. I think Watson can press them more than they can press him. They will be the ones with a scab QB and will look awful in the process in exchange for nothing.

I agree. Can the Texans play hardball? Sure. But if Watson is determined to get out they're going to cost themselves a lot by doing so. It's gonna be harder for them to re-sign their own guys and target premium free agents. They're gonna become that team no one wants to go to and they'll have to significantly overpay to keep and attract talent.

A scenario where the Texans hold on to Watson long enough for most or all of the potential suitors to go in other directions, then decide they want to trade him, isn't really that hard to imagine.

Watching many here on the huddle and on Twitter draw their own conclusions as to what happened with Cam and the Panthers is hilarious.

So many of you just need to stop.
