why would it triple it? The average contract of a 1st round pick is 4.33 years. It's extremely rare that a player plays for a franchise for a decade. It's also not as common for a 1st round pick to resign with their team after the first contract (56%). A team losing four first round picks, wouldnt set them back decades

I mean if you look at the patriots during their dynasty run, what did their first round picks really do for the franchise?  Yet they won 4 SBs regardless of their drafting.

over the last 20 years, the only noteworthy offensive player the Patriots drafted in the first round was one OG.  That's it.  Logan Mankins. Pretty remarkable.

I have been saying, if your GM can't draft in rounds 2-7 you have the wrong GM.  If 1st round picks determined so much, then Marty Hurney would have multiple Suoer Bowls here.

Patriots are a great example. They traded back so many times during their run. They scouted, picked, and developed players that fit their system, it worked well.

Look at Miami right now. They had (3) 1st round picks last year. They picked Tua, Austin Jackson, and Noah Igbinoghene. Tua for many reasons struggled last year. Jackson played okay, but he is ultimately a 2-3 year project. Noah barely saw the field. That team went from a 5 win team to a 10 win team with very little help from (3) 1st round rookies. They got better production from 2nd rounders Robert Hunt and Raekwon Davis. They got better production from 3rd rounders Brandon Jones. They got better production from 4th rounder Solomon Kindley. They benefitted from player development and a few free agent signings.

Last year the Panthers drafted well overall except for Kenny Robinson picked in the 4th round. This would need to continue if trading for Watson.

I keep saying this, but it bears repeating....the LA Rams have not had a first round pick since like 2016, and they will not have another one until like 2025.  They seem to be doing alright for themselves.  They are not afraid to use future first rounders to go grab CURRENT superstar NFL players.

Brady has covered up SO MUCH for that team over the past 20 years.  They have been horrible drafters, and pretty horrible over all talent evaluators....at least on the offensive side of the ball.

If you get Watson and then sign Von Miller while you try to find the Burns replacement in the draft....is that really a bad deal?

Yeah, that's a bad deal.

Brian Burns is 22, on a rookie contract and just getting started. Von Miller is 31, not anything close to what he used to be and at this point likely costs more than he's worth.

well, I think you are missing the point.

But Watson already has real fug you money from football and endorsements.

He isn't a random average player the league can push around.

Not in the least.

Not really.

Nobody is trying to "push him around"...but rather, the Texans want him to live up to the terms of the $156MM contract extension which he agreed to --- hurt feelings is not a legal excuse which allows him to breach the contract.

well, if 50 mill isn't fug you money and only 50 billion is.....we will have to agree to disagree on where that bar gets set.

Bottom line is Watson has such extreme financially security that can literally do anything he wants at this moment.   He has the security to flex on Hou in this moment.  And other sports have helped guide him to this moment.   He isn't the normal NFL player.   He has unique power.   He knows it.  The owners know it.   He isn't Bell.  He isn't a prior holdout threat.  All the owners know this too.

NFL teams can rip up a contract and part with a player any time they want.  And they do.  The "but you signed a contract so honor it" mantra has always been a bullshit narrative only players are expected to follow that the owners never have had any respect for.     Again, it was only a matter of time before this moment came to the NFL.

It's going to take us 5 years just to get back to the playoffs right now and that's just with poor drafting. Zero first round picks for 4 years would be triple that at the best.

This is so overly dramatic. The Rams won't have had a first in about a decade and continue to be in the hunt. There are still rounds 2-7, not to mention Watson's deal is actually very good value with the future QB contracts coming.

He doesn't have $50 million.

He sure can do anything he wants right now, no doubt...but if he wants to collect the balance due from his contract ($146,540,000) he's going to have to show up and play football.

NFL teams absolutely cannot "rip up a contract and part with a player any time they want"...total B.S..

Players absolutely retain the right to breach their contract at any time --- and when they do their pay stops, as well as all other benefits.

Most NFL contracts are really quite simple, if the players don't like them they shouldn't sign them.

Ok.  Exactly how much money does he have right now?   He has a poo ton right now.  What number are you cool with using so we can move past that.   Again, Cam was pulling in approximately 10 mill a year just on endorsements when deemed good.   And Watson has already earned a poo ton of NFL money they can't come get.

rip up was poor word usage.   I just see this move an the inevitable reaching the NFL.   Teams have no issue moving on from players.   Yeah, I know you signed a 5 year deal but we are cool taking the hit and moving on after 2.   Yeah, contracts spell out the ramifications when people part on both ends.   Team doesn't give a fug about loyalty, honoring a contract, etc.

Superstars are going to start flexing on owners in the NFL.  Maybe Watson folds and it will be someone else.   But it will be the elite QB who brings that to the NFL.   They wield sigfnicant power and are realizing it.   They are realizing what comparable are doing in other leagues.

maybe when he signed the deal he didn't realize Houston would continue going to down a culture dumpster fire.    Would the team stick with Watson if he turned into a dumpster fire?  Nah.

As I watch things unfold and it appears half the league is going to jockey into position to get one of the rookie QBs.   I think we need to do what is necessary to get Watson.

Houston has said they want picks and defensive players.  I could see 3 #1s and as much as I hate it we are going to have to part with Brown, Burns or Chinn and one other defensive player.  I doubt we give up two of those three.   They are basically getting 4 first round picks counting one of these 3 players.

Though the price is steep, I think this is our best way out of the crazy QBs frenzy.

Tepper wants a franchise QB and you can't say any of these guys(draft picks or free agents) are surefire 100% franchise outside of Lawrence and even he has a small chance at not being that guy. (I say this only because he hasn't played in the league yet)

It's going to suck to go a couple of years without a #1 pick but if we play our cards right those picks are going to be in the 20s and maybe 32.

It wouldn't be that much if we were a mid tier team looking to win now. But we are not and that means we give up 4 improvements to our team. That doesn't last just 4 years. Look at now bad the Ram's are becoming because of it. It's a dumb move for a team that lacks talent. Not to mention shipping CMC away win mean we have even less talent.
