Yeah and what we offered for Matt Stafford was a very, very fair deal, IMO. So, I do have some faith that we aren't going to lose our minds and spend an absurd amount to get Watson.

All of that is likely fan/media overreaction. It may be a crazy market but that doesn't mean we as a franchise have to do crazy stuff.

I’m not saying what we should or shouldn’t do, just what I think it will take.

Let me ask you this, take off your Panthers hat and pretend you are the Jets.  What would you give up for Watson? Remember they have 5 1st round picks over the next 3 years and a tremendous amount of cap space to fill out a roster.

Would you give up three 1st and two 2nds if you were them? I would

Honestly I’d give them all 5 firsts the next 3 years and not even think twice about it.

I'd probably pony up the 3 1st round picks but probably not the 2 seconds, as well. Let's not forget that is also a team lacking pretty heavily in talent.

If I were to pick a team that would have the LEAST issue giving up those, it's probably Miami. They already are a good team so winning now might suit their purposes a lot more. For the Jets and us, we still have a lot of building to accomplish. Miami just needs some fine tuning.

Worth noting that might also factor into Watson's thinking.

He has the $30 mil signing bonus but they will eventually be able to get all that back if he really did sit out his entire contract.

No, in the 10 Burns scenario, Chinn is our QB.

maybe they could get the majority of it if he retired and doesn't play again.   They ain't getting it because he sits this season.   And this is going to be a short term war IMO.

They can only come after it on a season by season basis, not all in one chunk.

Agreed. I don't expect it will extend into the season, although they may be dumb enough to do that.

I think Watson actually could sit.

But it would not go beyond one year.  Watson a different breed.   Think Hou would eventually alter the FO after the franchise implodes over some pretty pointless people.

Yeah, I would sit if I were Watson. Get healthy, work out, win the media game.....

I would maintain an active media presence and twist the media narrative to my advantage. The NFL is not going to want to see one of it's future stars on the sideline.

Depending on what the cap is Jets could end up with close to $80m in cap space.  That can go a long ways to filling a roster especially in an offseason that should be a buyers market.

Also I just noticed those extra 1st are this year and next.  Two 1st in the current year would be pretty strong.

I do agree though that Miami can also offer a really good package of picks but if the Jets like QB2 a lot more that QB3 than the Jets have a huge advantage.

Either way, both teams, if they decide to be aggressive could push the price way up for us. I could see us having to offer multiple players along with some picks.

Making a bunch of "splash" free agent signings in one offseason doesn't usually net long term success, so I don't know if I would be keen on going down that road if I were the Jets.

We will see what transpires. I suspect that the result will be surprising, no matter what happens.

It's funny that you believe only NFL owners can act on principle, whereas players of a certain "sort" only see green.

Says a lot about your worldview.

I never said "only NFL owners can act on principle"...those are your words.

What I am saying is Deshaun has WAY more to lose by holding out than the Texans and McNair do by holding him to the letter of his contract.

Folks are letting their personal emotions and hate for "the man" get in the way of logical analysis of the respective contractual obligations and impact on each party for not living up to their end of the contract.

He was kinda prolific with Shula. He won an MVP with him and Olsen as the only outstanding offensive skill player. The beef there should be with the supporting cast  assembled around him by the GMs more than the coordinator.

Your right I forgot how awesome Shula was that year.
