REPORT: Mac Jones not high on Panthers QB draft board

Beauty is literally in the eye of the beholder. There isn't a perfect QB prospect in the Draft. For me:

Lawrence

  • + athleticism / plus arm / plus mobility / starting experience / unscripted plays
  • - missed reads / inaccuracy (worryingly so at times)

Fields

  • + athleticism / plus arm / plus mobility / unscripted plays
  • - missed reads / v. simple OSU offence (don't teach a lot of concepts you see in the NFL)

Wilson

  • + plus arm (incl. ability to throw from multiple angles) / mobility / plus accuracy / unscripted plays
  • - awful footwork

Jones

  • + Pro ready / good reads / accuracy
  • - average NFL arm / pocket passer / surrounding talent

Lance

  • + athleticism / plus arm / plus mobility / running ability
  • - glaring missed reads / footwork (which got worse in 2020) / surrounding talent / inexperience

So it literally all depends on what you're looking for in a QB - 4 of the 5 guys can literally play in any system you want. With Jones he's system specific, but that's not a bad thing.

I wouldn't want to start Lance, Fields or Wilson in Year 1. They're all going to have huge technical / mental things to work on. Of those 3 I'd be most comfortable starting Wilson as a rookie, but his footwork is baaaaad (I finally put my finger on why I'm not overly sold on him!).

Exactly why I would trade for a veteran qb, no way I’m moving up for unknowns after Lawrence and giving up all that draft capital.

I'd happily trade for a veteran QB, but that market has almost dried up.

With this current crop of QBs - I just don't see this 'Top 4 Franchise QB' distinction. They've all got flaws that could be crippling. I'm not interviewing / at the pro day evaluating them so I'm literally guessing whether they're flaws they can overcome.

If you love a guy, sure, trade up for him - but damn you'd better be right.

Just wait. You'll see. I still think we'll draft him.

I cannot dismiss this.   In February, if you aren't drafting someone you don't mention them.  Still, we shall see.  I think we are going to grab a free agent to take the pressure off--I would not be surprised to see us going after Minshew--the available QB nobody seems to be talking about--but there are options.  There are so many Huddlers who dismiss a qb because he was in a bad system, bad OL, no defense, and limited WRs.  All QBs look bad in that situation.  Always playing from behind eliminates the run game and allows the d to tee off.  I think we should take a long look at the damaged goods and apply their skill sets to what we do here.

To me the most interesting and informationless comment was about CBs.

I think Person trying to figure out what the Panthers are doing tells me one thing--the guy has no contacts--no insider information--he should start quoting the Huddle's 4 Corners.  About as legit.

There's a lot of wisdom in what you're saying. Minshew, for all his issues (which may have been caused by the factors you listed) has this going for him that Teddy does not offer: he can and will wing that ball out there and push to win. Foolish at times (which may be a product of his youth), he can also be fearless and that can win games with the right personnel. We have the right personnel.

Now, about Mac Jones. There is going to be a lot of jockeying for those prime real estate QBs, the famous top four or five that get all the press. We aren't going to be able to grab one of them without making some serious sacrifices. Odds also say that roughly half of them aren't going to pan out, no matter who picks them. (And this is a very young group of top tier QB prospects who don't have a whole lot of starting experience between them).

We're going to let teams churn the draft order above us and stay out of the fray. If Jones is still there, we take him. If not, he probably won't make it past Denver. If he somehow does, he won't make it past the needy teams like Minnesota or New England. Belichick will take Jones if he is still on the board. And honestly, I wouldn't put it past New Orleans to try and trade up to get him mid round... they have all of the tools in place to give him a team that overpowers opponents like he had at Alabama and a coaching staff that is very good at turning a pure passer into a huge threat.

Jones doesn't have the star quality of the guys in front of him. He doesn't have the athleticism of the guys in front of him. He's a 20-something with a Dad bod. But he wins and he makes the guys around him look like the best in the business. A good coach can ride that all the way to the championship game again and again.
