Backup QB philosophy

Excluding developmental guys that teams are trying to train for the future, most organizations look at the backup quarterback one of two ways:

A) We want him to be as good as possible just in case our starter suffers a big injury and he needs to play several games

B) If our starter gets hurt, we're screwed anyway so let's just get somebody cheap

Which of these options do you prefer?

Sign Trubisky to top 5 backup QB money over 5 years. Let him have a crack at starting next year. Best case, starting works out and you have a top 15 QB for backup money for 4 more years. Worst case, you’re paying one of the best backup QBs market value.

Sounds great let’s have two high priced backup qbs, that you Hurney?

Too many factors to say. It boils down to if the team can win without the starting QB. If its a great team, you 100% need a top backup. Backups have won SBs, playoffs, and much more. If you got a team like the panthers or jets,  it doesnt matter. Go cheap or dig for gold.

You can do both. Look at Winston with the Saints last year, and a Teddy the year before. You go with starters who got benched/cut who is not good enough to lead a team full time, but can fill in and win you games short term. Almost all teams are screwed if the starter is out long periods of time, but someone like Fitz, Gabbert, Teddy, Dalton, Brissett, etc are people who can save your season if you need them for 4 games.

Not hard to understand. Trade Bridgewater for a 7th if need be. Bring in Trubisky for 5 years, ~$5-7 mil per and worst case, you bottom tier starter for top end backup QB money while you search for your franchise QB. Here’s the kicker, Trubisky could still develop into a top 15 QB over that contract.

I'd absolutely always carry three QBs - it's the most important position in sports.

You have your starter, a backup who can step in should the starter go down and a developmental guy.

That backup would usually be a vet, but could be the aforementioned developmental guy that's.... well, developed. You still churn that third spot every other year with a Draft pick to find the next guy (at either starter or backup).
