The Panthers were 31st in team spending on defense. The defensive performance for 2020 was offset by all the new draft picks, so we moved closer to the middle of the pack stats wise. The Panthers defense did what one would expect given the roster, or you could argue they did a little better. Unfortunately 2020 was not a season of surprises as the Panthers team as a whole did almost exactly what we were expecting given the roster. We didn't overachieve, and we didn't underachieve. We hit the target for what most were anticipating, which was a losing season near the bottom on the league, but not rock bottom. I said that going into the season. We did just that. My point is that our talent level on the roster is what really matters. Grandpa Snow is not going to take a roster like we had in 2020 and coach them into a top defense. No chance of that.

Moving forward we should improve on stats on defense due to last season's rookie wave improving, and new picks and better free agents rolling into town.

This doesn't even make any sense.  I mean "...performance was offset by all the new draft picks, so we moved closer to the middle of the pack..."  You do realize that most people who bring in so many rookies fall to the bottom right?  We were 31st on defense last year!  THIRTY FIRST!  Snow got us up to 18th, with a lesser group.

By every measure, that defense overperformed given expectations and talent.  Honestly, it wouldn't be all that hard to argue that our defense was better than our offense.  Yes, I agree, a great many of our problems on offense revolved around the QB, but nonetheless, our defense handed the ball to our offense in the fourth quarter at least seven times this year with a chance to win.

That's the kind of defense you want.  Keep you in the game, hand the ball to your team and give them a chance.

Spending every pick on defense prevented the 2020 defense from being rock bottom. If you disagree I don't know what to tell you.

I was satisfied.  One of the things he did was dropped Burris back with Chinn at times.  He brought Boston into the box more---so I see a CB, FS, LB, and DL in his future.

We do not have his ideal CB on the roster.  Pride is close--he just needs to learn a bit more.  Jackson could be the speed guy--he is a competitor.

Phil Snow still being on this coaching staff is a HUGE red flag for Coach Ruhle.

???.. is this one your baits? Snow proved his worth last year and I had plenty of questions about him leading the D. They lost the whole starting DL- Poe, KK(again in 20), Mario, Irvin, bradberry, top backup Bulter (laugh away, he had 7.5 sacks), HOFer Luke, Eric Reid, and top backup Cockell. ALLLLL OF that, convid, and new to the league/area AND still played better! The guy should have gotten assistant of the year. Theres a reason for using all picks on D, it was devoid of talent, hell it still is! Just pretend he took one class at UNC.

Wait, wut?

Are you trying to say our defense UNDER achieved this year?

Our defense went from 31st in 2019 to 18th in 2020 in terms of points surrendered.  Our overall talent level decreased monumentally with the loss of James Bradberry and Luke Kuechly, and yet our results improved.

Phil Snow deserves a damn medal for that alone, all the while he was being doubted across the media and fan base alike.

Look, he may yet hit his ceiling.  He may not be the guy in the long run.  But he began a turnaround for us.  He definitely deserves our support, and a chance to build on that.

I agree, I felt phil snow did a great job considering what he was given to work with.

Remember when panthers d made Drew Lock look like Pat Mahomes and lost a game after getting burned by Don BeeBee Jr?

I remember, I also remember the other 15 games too and understand all teams have one of the "those" performances during the season. Panthers had a shut-out, I think only 4 teams were able to match that feat. He got results with faaar less talent and did so without training camp, rookie camp, OTAs. Mainly with rookies(someone here thinks that a positive) and cast-offs, did you expect the D to play vastly better heading into the season?? I can not believe youre giving him no credit for the job he did. Youre wrong on this, bro.

When the chips were down in key late game situations they came up with stops the majority of the time... then Teddy shat the bed.

Blame Game: Who's at fault for Panthers late game failures?

Gamebooks

  • Raiders - Defense gave up a scoring drive just before to force the Panthers into a game winning drive situation. The above article shows how the offensive drive was an amalgamation of issues
  • Bears - Was never in a position to lead and somehow the defense couldn't stop the Bears' offense?
  • Saints - Defense stepped up and kept the team in the game. No arguments here.
  • Falcons - Was on the field for literally an entire quarter combined in the 2nd half as ATL effortlessly marched downfield.
  • Chiefs - Defense once again was the let down. Offense kept up, but the defense started the 2nd half allowing the Chiefs to march downfield and miss a field goal, then score three TDs, and then "stepped up" when the team now needed two scores due to the defense not being able to hold up?
  • Vikings - The defense gave up a TD with 50sec to go to give the Vikings a 1pt lead. Offense drove downfield and Slye missed the game winning field goal
  • Broncos - Drew Lock was 21 of 27 for 280yds, 4 TDs, and 149.5 rating.
  • Packers - Score was 21-3 after the first half and the moment that the Panthers got in striking distance (21 - 13) only for the defense to give up 3pts after a 10 play, 5:00 drive that went 42yds to make it 24-13 with 3:39 left in the game. The defense didn't step up: the Packers dialed it back.

Teddy isn't the long term answer and I don't think you can find any sane individuals that would say otherwise, but to sit there and put a majority of the losses on him while misrepresenting the defense's contribution to those losses is something else.

Defense wasn’t clutch and totally unreliable. This is a good post. People get to caught up in stats. Phil Snow sucks as do his defensive philosophies and that pretty much closes the case.

The defense looked a lot better than expected and trended up while Bridgewater trended down. That much is certain. However, they also played their roles in the team's losses this season as much as people want to put that blame on one player that replaced their favourite.

I'm very interested to see what the defense looks like this season with a full year under its belt.

    • Rhule was GM for 2020 and 2021/final say/total control/______/head cheese   Then afters years of trying to find a QB, trepper issued a order to get one at all cost. Even without BY fumble and after the rhule driving the draft/FAs(member erving and elf lollolols) fittererererer was no improvement.
