I cannot think of one player to ever play the game that was MORE intense than SS.  I was at the 2005 game against Minnesota where Fred Smoots said he was going to shut Smitty down.

It was not as he thought.  I believe Smitty had 2 TD and 199 yds and Smoots was ruined as a DB after that. I can watch his highlight reels over and over.  Love watching him going up as a 5'9" receiver and out jumping multiple defenders.  I miss watching him play.

And sadly I watch him tear us a new A-hole when we played Baltimore.  

I can see why Culley never brought it up.

If you watch the video Ricky posted, the way Smitty tells it is that Cully was short a WR and the punter hadn't arrived yet, so Harbaugh sent him over to run with the receivers. Culley basically told him t get his sorry ass back over to the JV team and leave the real WR's alone. I'm definitely paraphrasing that last part, but I guarantee that's how Smitty heard it.

Even when Smith was at the end of his rookie contract and wanting a new big payday he caught wind of someone involved in the contract negotiations calling him an "unproven" WR. He was furious about this comment and went on a rant. Many sports media talking heads acknowledged that Smith was a good WR, but doubted if he was worth top dollar at the time.

I am sure Cully had no idea what danger he was in by dismissing Smith as belonging with the special teams unit. Smith gave Ken Lucas a terrible beating for unclear reasons during a lull practice, so anyone could become a target and it didn't much to set Smith off.

He was a rookie right? I'm sure the vets would be happy to give up reps at the probowl...in Hawaii lol. Seems like a great chance for the Vets to enjoy the nasty weather and a rookie to learn something, anything. The game did decide homefield advantage for the next scrimmage game. 

Wasn't Cam pushed into a pool his rookie year at a party? Very serious stuff, that's why we had one this year, or maybe ever again.

      keaton is a former Catamount.  The list I saw had only 2--Sanker and Emmanwori.  But I do recall hearing about Bowman. The theory that we are looking for specific hybrid safeties is upheld by this.  Keaton fits the "type" who can play zone or deep and in the box.  "He's a physical player with a high motor and a nose for the football. He has a good understanding of zone coverage and can play in the box as a force defender. Keaton is a leader and has earned a single-digit jersey number at Temple, a tradition reserved for team leaders." At WCU, he averaged 6.5 tackles per game, leading the team before transferring. Sanker has special teams abilities and a high football IQ.  He can cover TEs and RBs and keeps the play in front.  He would be a nice fit as a depth player.  I did not know they met with Bowman at the SR bowl.  He is more of a free safety who struggles in tackling/run support, but that is not to say he is not versatile within his capabilities. Stark is a SS who is a brutal hitter, but I don't see his hybrid qualities--they met with him at the Combine when everyone was in the building, but that was nearly 2 months ago and I don't think there has been contact since. Emmanwori is who they would love to have in my opinion.  NFL Draft Buzz:  "His ability to play in the box, handle man coverage responsibilities, and deliver bone-crushing hits makes him an ideal fit for defenses that ask their safeties to wear multiple hats." So it seems they are looking for a type.  The Keaton pick is intriguing to me because he is a sleeper who would clearly be there in round 5 or later.  They seem attracted to his characteristics, and he is a thumper who can play deep.  To me, the fact that they want 2 hybrid safeties of a certain type is rather obvious.  Maybe I am forcing a round peg into a square hole, but I love trying to see what skillsets teams value to guess draft picks.
