Interesting article that could see us potentially trading down to grab Mond in mid-late first round.

Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule gave high praise to Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond.

The MVP of the Senior Bowl was coached by Rhule and his staff this week and left a strong impression by throwing for 173 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday’s college All-Star finale.

“We’re talking about a really, really football smart guy here,” Rhule said after the game. “You give him a play and he knows it. He kind of got into a rhythm there in the third quarter, just ripping some seam balls, making some plays. I think he’s got a bright future.”

Mond finished an outstanding 2020 season, leading the 4th-ranked Aggies to a 9-1 record with a 41-27 Orange Bowl victory over No. 13 North Carolina. The San Antonio, Texas native threw for 2,282 yards with 19 touchdowns and three interceptions.

In CBS Sports’ latest Round 1 mock draft, analyst Chris Trapasso has Jones and Mond going in the first 32 picks, but not Trask. We’ve seen plenty of projections for Trask in Round 1, but these are some of the first projections for Jones and Mond in the first round.

Absolutely ZERO way we take him in the first round no matter how far back we trade.  I would have serious reservations about taking him at 39. Now, trade back again, picking up even more picks and taking him late 2nd round I would be fine with.  Not completely happy, mind you, but not upset either.

He has flashes where he looks good. Also has periods where he looks like he has no idea what he's doing.

I do not place a lot of stock at the SR Bowl, but he completed 56% of his passes and that was without blitzing etc.  It was the perfect stage for him to showcase his talent, and he has talent, he just has not put it all together yet.  He is a project, so he should be picked by a team with an established starter to groom.

From a statistical standpoint, Kellen Mond is one of the most prolific players to not only play in College Station, but also the SEC. He's a slim, but adequately built quarterback prospect who possesses lots of velocity with throws when able to step into them. With a high-elbow but snappy type of release, he has the torque and enthusiasm behind passes that enables him to be very efficient in the short to intermediate areas. Mond always displays high levels of poise as he often shows that he’s never in a hurry. From his mechanics to how he deals with pressure surrounding him, he remains under control and focused on the task at hand. He's one of the most battled-tested throwers in the country as he takes an excruciating amount of hits throughout games but continues to battle and make throws. The often occurrence of shots to his body has helped him better deal with pressure from all directions inside the pocket. He's mainly a half-field read thrower that can get the ball out quickly and efficiently when on schedule. While barely scratching the level of an above-average athlete, he has enough athleticism to get himself out of trouble and gain hidden yardage when breaking outside of the pocket as well. He's strictly a shotgun/pistol quarterback who’s had all of his experience there. 

Playing faster is sometimes needed, but he remains at the same pace. Decaying pockets can be challenging for him to escape and he waits too long to make that decision instead of correctly timing when, where, and how to exit the pocket in order to explore and create off-script opportunities. He shows great stages of poise, but will have plays where he makes questionable throws down the field in hopes of being bailed out by aggressive perimeter options. 

Ideal Role: Developmental QB that could lead to being a high-end backup option.

I think it will depend how he does in combine and pro days.

Judging from the Panther's history, the fact that he can take a hit may be the most important thing to look for in our next QB.

      I'd say its definitely going to be addressed this off-season.  We went into the last draft with a roster of RBs including:  Chubba, Blackshear, and Miles Sanders. We picked Jonathan Brooks in the second and still signed Rashaad Penny afterwards.  Fast forward....One turned into a top 10 back, 1 is injured/out for most if not all the '25 season, 1 retired, 1 will either take a huge paycut or be cut, and the last is a restricted free agent. We brought in Mike Boone as well. Add him to the free agent list also.  We need a physical option.    Which qualifies:  Ashton Jeanty(Boise St): Overall ranked Top 10. Almost 2k yards after contact, 28 tds. Would take our first rounder. My money would be on an NFC East team selecting him. (97.2 PFF run grade) - 121 forced missed tackles.  Omarion Hampton(UNC): Ranked everywhere from 20 - 59 overall. Consensus #2 back after Jeanty. He'll be a second rounder. 1,222 Yards after contact w/ 15 tds.  (90.5 PFF run grade) - 72 forced missed Tackles Kaleb Johnson(Iowa): Ranked from 38 - 69 depending on which media outlet you prefer but generally #3. 2nd/3rd possibly. 1,060 Yards after contact w/ 21 tds.(86.7 PFF run grade)- 66 forced missed tackles Cam Skattebo: Ranked from the 50's - 104. Every mock I do he ends up BPA at some point. 969 Yards after contact w/ 17 tds(92 PFF Run Grade). Probably the best receiving back of the group. 81 forced missed tackles.  If the '24 and '25 draft classes were combined, IMO the rankings would be, in order: Jeanty, Hampton, Brooks, Johnson, Skattebo. I wouldn't take one high but I'd take one for Chubba and Brooks insurance.
