What Carolina and others offered for Stafford

I won't say he has zero leverage, but his leverage involves potentially returning a huge portion of his signing bonus.  You get this, many others do not.  The statement about what the no trade clause means is spot on.  If the team approaches him saying they want to trade him to the Lions, he can refuse to waive it and that potential trade falls by the way side.

But, he approached the team (sort of) saying he wants a trade.  That does not waive the no-trade clause, but if he provides them a list of teams he is open to going to and they can't work out a trade that is good for the Texans, he is a Texan.  The Texans are not obligated to trade him, they are more or less only obligated to trade him to a team he agrees to go to IF they trade him at all.

The signing bonus is not for merely signing the contract.  It is for signing the contract and then honoring it.  If the team terminates the contract by releasing him, he keeps the signing bonus because he lived up to his end and would have (presumably) honored it until the end had the team not terminated it.  If he breaches it and things go completely down the sewer, the pro-rated part of the signing bonus goes with it.

BrianS, does he eventually become a free agent or does the contractual clock just stop indefinitely until he returns to the team or announces his retirement?  I'm too lazy to look that part up.

The only way he accrues seasons is if he shows up to play the games.  I'm not sure what the exact obligations are in the contract, but there are a certain number of games you have to be eligible to play in order to get the year qualified as a "season" for the purposes of fulfilling the contract.  Obviously, injuries are another thing.  So sure, Deshaun could come back, get "injured" in the first game and sit out.  Then it would REALLY get ugly.

But the bottom line is that he needs to be eligible to play a certain number of games to get that counted as one of his seasons.

Yeah don’t worry I will remind y’all when this trade happens.

Nobody is saying a trade will never happen but this notion that DW has all the leverage and there's zero chance the Texans call his bluff is ill-informed & short-sighted...

...perfect description of your good buddy Stan Norfleet!

Also worth mentioning that whether you accrue a season or not, you can't stop your body from getting a year older.

Danke, sir.  Essentially, he could die of old age as a Texan, owing them two more years (extreme example).  I see Mr.Scot just sort of pointed that out.

As is almost always the case in labor contract/law issues, it is in everybody's best interest to work in good faith.  For Watson, that means honoring his contract and not doing anything that cheapens his value to the Texans.  For the Texans, it is reaching a trade agreement that is acceptable to them with a team Watson will go to, or doing something that will cause him to retract his trade demand.

Anything short of that involves hurt on both sides.

Took me a while, but here it is, from the CBA:

Quote

16. EXTENSION. Unless this contract specifically provides otherwise, if Player becomes a member of the Armed Forces of the United States or any other country, or retires from professional football as an active player, or otherwise fails or refuses to perform his services under this contract, then this contract will be tolled between the date of Player’s induction into the Armed Forces, or his retirement, or his failure or refusal to perform, and the later date of his return to professional football. During the period this contract is tolled, Player will not be entitled to any compensation or benefits. On Player’s return to professional football, the term of this contract will be extended for a period of time equal to the number of seasons (to the nearest multiple of one) remaining at the time the contract was tolled. The right of renewal, if any, contained in this contract will remain in effect until the end of any such extended term.

CMC is unlikely to be traded. Not only do most teams(perhaps none) not want him with that contract but it would be extremely detrimental to our cap.

Huh? His contract is pretty reasonable, and the cap hit is nothing if we can land a top 5 QB. I hope we can hold on to McCaffrey, but he is obviously movable.

He is the highest paid RB in the NFL. That is far, far from being reasonable. Even without the bonus hit, which would stay with us, there are not many teams in the NFL that want to pay a RB $8.5-12 mil/year.

That is why there are only 6 other RB's in the NFL making more than $8 mil/year next season. Of that group of the top 7 paid running backs in 2021, only one team was a playoff participant this past season and those 7 teams went a combined 41-70.

As has been discussed before on this forum, RB's have been rather devalued in the past 15+ years of the NFL. It was an extremely stupid extension and made doubly worse by the fact that we didn't have to sign it when we did(with two years remaining on his contract). To pile on even further, he probably isn't the highest paid RB in the NFL without Marty Hurney as our GM signing a terrible extension at a terrible time.

Fair enough, and yes, that was a stupid comment by me re: McCaffrey's contract. It was unnecessary, agreed.

Doesn't make him untradeable though. Not that I want to see him traded, but he is absolutely in play, especially with a team that is hemorrhaging star players. That is not far fetched.

One other thing. I know the value of RBs is down in general, but they're not obsolete. What would the Saints be without Kamara or the Titans without Henry, for instance? I don't know. Wouldn't surprise me if the league starts using RBs again. Probably never see Earl Campbell again, but if RBs start picking up 6 yards per carry, might be another adjustment.

    • We really haven’t seen him in the playoffs. In the 2-3 games he has played he looked good. But those sample sizes are so small. It’s Koochies goal now. Let’s rally behind him.
    • lol the weather man? I think he had some substance abuse issues going on but might be doing better.
