Wasn’t JT Daniels still recovering from a knee injury? I seem to recall that he had to have a clean up procedure sometime in the summer/fall timeframe. I think that’s the only reason it took him so long to get the start.

Yeah he was injured. Newman would have been the starter. Smart knows if you bench high profile players that transfer, it can be bad for future transfers.

For those wondering about Goff and the Lions' attitude about grabbing another QB right away, there is this article.

https://lionswire.usatoday.com/2021/01/31/trading-for-jared-goff-gives-the-lions-a-starter-level-qb-and-a-potential-bridge-to-the-future/

"At just 26 years of age, the door isn’t shut on Goff revitalizing his career with the Lions — it’s happened before, look no further than Ryan Tannehill and the Titans — but he has shown that when he feels pressure in the pocket, he struggles to produce and that’s a significant concern.

Can the Lions get him enough pass protection? Can QB coach Mark Brunell use his 19 years of NFL quarterbacking experience to teach him how to handle the pressure? Those will surely be questions at the forefront of the Lions coaching staff this offseason."

Because of this, adding a quarterback with the No. 7 pick in the NFL draft is still very much in play.

With four quarterbacks capable of being selected at the top of this draft, the Lions will be in a position to get value for their pick. If there is a large gap between the Lions’ quarterback rankings, they now have enough draft capital to trade up to get their guy if they need to.

If the Lions do select a quarterback in this draft class, Goff is the perfect bridge quarterback for Detroit, as they won’t feel the need to force the rookie into action early and can give him time to develop."

OK, If I am the GM in Detroit, here is how I approach this:  We have a former NFL star QB who thinks he can save Goff.  Goff is 26--seven years younger than Stafford---and has demonstrated that he can play if protected.  Drafting a QB in round 1 before they know what they can do with Goff is probably overkill.  I think they Lions will draft an OL (Sewell) or a WR (Chase, Devanta Smith).  They could trade back, and they could double down and take a QB early, but if he needs protection, I just see the Lions building a line and giving him weapons.

Broke his hand so Flores sidelined him. There was a tweet from Shefter that he was begging to play. I’d take him just on his practice tape over anyone on our squad.

I would also remind Panther fans of the success we have had in the past picking small school OL---Silatolu?  Kugbila?  He could be a great kid with a great motor, but...proceed with caution.

Gotta remember the GM in Detroit is the guy who pushed the Rams to do whatever it took to get Goff back in 2016.

Didn't see the Lions article mentioning that even while discussing Holmes, but then USA today has some really crappy team writers.

I just do not know if this was a condition for giving LA the cap room needed so the trade can go down or if they really want him....If we got him, I think we'd give him a season (at age 26) especially if we had Brunell. I personally think system and supporting talent, defense, etc. make a difference.

Even if you dump Stafford's salary, accepting Goff's deal for a backup QB is not exactly strategic-

    • Leaning towards just ordering this tonight, but now I have no idea on size. Has anyone bought a bunch of jerseys in the last few years and can convey how the Game vs Limited vs Reebok versions all fit? These are both Mediums... The white one here is a Reebok one from 2010, and was when they had the "+2 length" on the tag and it was the version with the stitched numbers instead of iron on... the blue one is from 2022 and is the F.U.S.E Limited version also with stitched stuff, not the "game jersey" with the ironed on numbers/letters that they have the T-Mac jerseys in. The old one fits me fine, the blue one was always a tad snug on me, particularly in the shoulders I'm leaning going with a Large based on the CMC, but for all I know, that is made with a tighter cut due to the higher "limited" level and the "game" ones they have for T-Mac are cut more like a T-Shirt and thus will fit more like the old white one I have here, not sure. (and yes, I already tried going to a sporting goods store here to hopefully try on a Lions jersey to see, but they don't have any right now)
    • I think there's a ton of potential in that WR room. But they really are unproven right now. Hopefully they live up to the hype.
    • My unbelievable pile is touching the moon now-a-days. Bill is ultra control freak if there was ever one in the NFL, he's the guy. He stayed off SM and hate hate hated the media..........(wow bill what did you do in 2024??!?!?!).  So this guy, 100% control freak, just gave away all his SM to a 24 year old?? He doesn't understand SM at all... This is the same level as 8 time SB winner coming to coach UNC, after all this NIL BS that drove out his other control freak coaching friends.  This time line is insane.
