Deshaun Watson and the Texans have two options each when it comes to the quarterback’s trade demand.

Watson can continue to let agent David Mulugheta work behind the scenes to pressure general manager Nick Caserio to trade his client, including leaking to the national media how miserable his client is and how determined he is to get out of Houston because his relationship with the team is irreparable.

If the Texans refuse to trade Watson, he can tell them he’s willing to sit out or retire, which few would take seriously because he’s a great quarterback in the prime of his career with a $156 million contract that’s set up him and his family for a lifetime of luxury.

As for the Texans, they can call Watson’s bluff and remind him and Mulugheta they negotiated in good faith the four-year extension that averages $39 million a year. They can reiterate how much they love and value Watson and that he’ll continue to be their quarterback as long as he’s under contract through the 2025 season.

Or Caserio can field a multitude of offers from quarterback-desperate teams, listen carefully to their proposals right up until April 29 — the first day of the draft — and engineer what could be the biggest trade in NFL history.

The Texans have known Watson wants out since Caserio was hired. It became official Thursday when the trade request was leaked to the national media, and the Texans knew it was coming.

Their response is and will be that Watson is their quarterback, he’s under contract, and they have no intention of trading him. That’s what they’re telling teams that inquire about Watson’s availability. That will be their response until somebody makes them an offer they can’t refuse.

This isn’t going to end soon. There’s no hurry. The draft is three months away. Training camp is six months away.

If they reach a point where they believe it’s in the Texans’ best interests to trade Watson, Caserio will have to persuade chairman and CEO Cal McNair to let him pull the trigger on what should be an unprecedented deal.

If we made picks to attempt to get Watson in a trade, instead of just building for the future once Houston goes into dumb mode......we will be a dumpster fire in no time.

I'd love to have Watson but I wouldn't shy away from taking a QB at #8(if available) if Houston decides 2021 is going to be hardball time.

That haul amount will drop the longer they hold out. It will get less after free agency and the draft, because potential suitors will be off the board. Especially if teams he is willing get traded to move forward with their plans.

Make no mistake, the league isn't going to grind to a standstill to wait on the resolution of this stand off. And the fact that his value is so high is that the need for QB's is extremely high at the moment. That changes when QB's get drafted or QB needy teams decide to sign free agents instead of wait.

I know the Texans aren’t smart, but they should do this now before some of these teams start falling in love with QBs or other players in the draft.

That could change the calculus for a lot of orgs.

Honestly though, there is no way they are ok with the leader of their team dragging down the entire locker room next season.

They could end up losing a lot more than just Deshaun.

Its over and they know it.

You are forgetting about ego. 

That owner might be more than happy to make Watson sit a year, and give up an extra pick or two, over letting Watson get his way. 

Even though I have my doubts they would get much less next year.  His trade value might go down somewhat after the draft this year, but then it will just go back up next offseason.

The question is, do they know it? It would be interesting to hear the conversations inside the organization these days.

That's Houston and Watson right now. 

Key issue in the whole thing is that McNair absolutely doesn't want to do it.

Even if Caserio and Culley were on board, they'd still have to convince McNair. And per McClain, that would require "an unprecedented deal", basically "more than anyone has ever traded", and even then they'd still have to talk McNair into it.

That's a big reason why I'm doubtful it happens. If we were just talking about getting Caserio / Culley to relent, that'd be one thing.

If McNair digs his heels in, then we're talking about his ego and him having to admit he lost the battle.

Basically, that ain't happnin'

Oh I am not forgetting about ego. Hence the reason why I talk about the standoff lasting past this offseason. 

I do think his value could drop if the young drop of QB's step up and become NFL starters. Let's say that we get 3-5 potential starters from this draft. That's 3-5 potential suitors off the market. Let's say the Lions trade or cut Stafford and he ends up on a team that was considering trading for Watson. Or let's say Sam Darnold is suddenly a star without Gase. Those are all factors that make market demand drop. 

Less demand.....likely a lower price. It's not to say all of that will happen or that a team or teams may not get very desperate and be willing to give up anything but any of those things happening does hurt the overall market for him.

And let's not forget that there may be a big gulf between what the media speculates of his potential price and what an actual NFL team is willing to give up.
