Most Disappointing Moves of the 2020 Offseason

According to Dan Graziano of Espn
4. Panthers sign QB Teddy Bridgewater.

Nothing Surprising here, most of said this was a bad move going into it.

A few notes from the article:

Panthers paid Bridgewater $24 million in 2020 and $10 million of his $17 million 2021 salary is fully guaranteed.”

The Panthers could have kept Cam Newton for $19.1 million, probably not done a whole lot worse than they did, and also not be on the hook for another $10 million in 2021.”

These are the type of dumb decisions that a rebuilding franchise can’t continue to make.

Let’s do what we have to do to land one of the big 4 QBs in the draft and not go chasing other veteran QBs that don’t fit into this rebuild. Time for Rhule and Brady to start fresh and get the guy that will define their tenure here.

Ron can walk away saying he won multiple division titles, a NFC championship, a Super Bowl appearance, and Head Coach of the year because he had Cam.

No more bad decisions at that position please.

I don't have any issue with bringing in Teddy this past off-season. He had a great track record, a good upside, and was proven to be a smart, reliable QB to serve as a placeholder and keep us competitive until the team found their next franchise QB.

I'll go to my grave never understanding why we paid him that much money.

Typical Hurney bidding against himself moment, I suspect.

You seem to be saying here that you favor spending assets (players and/or draft picks) to move up to draft one of the Big 4. If we are going to spend assets, my first choice would be to spend them on a young, proven player like Watson. If we are outbid for Watson by teams with greater assets, then I would agree with spending assets to move up for a quarterback the staff has a conviction on. They just better be right.

Please tell me we aren’t back to completion percentage.

He was middle of the pack when it comes to passing yards - he moved the offence, he just didn't finish enough drives.

The way people talk about him it's like we paid $60m for Mike Glennon.

He's obviously not the guy for the future - or potentially next year with the rumours circulating, but damn people have zero perspective. He was an ok starting NFL QB last year.

Look I’m not in NFL front offices. I don’t know if a QB will fall to 8 or not. I’m saying we should do our research on each of the top 4 (minus Trevor), go through the scenarios and internal mock drafts and see if we have a realistic chance of getting the guy(s) we like. If we do then you sit at 8 and take the best one available assuming you like them all. If you believe they aren’t going to be there you absolutely move up to take them. It will still cost less than Watson and possibly Stafford.

To be clear here I don’t think we have a realistic chance of getting Watson so I’m not even considering that possibility. But hell no to Stafford.

Signing Teddy was the wrong move.

Moving on from Cam was not.

Look I wasn’t against going into the year with Will as the starter. I personally believe we should have let Cam play out his contract, but wouldn’t have been mad if we just rolled with Will.

He had three stud WRs that made up for his mediocrity. How many times did you see Moore, Samuel and Anderson have to break off their route to adjust to a poor deep throw or make a great play to catch (or try to catch a GW TD)? I saw tons. Teddy was mediocre but the may have had the best trio of WRs in the NFL and he still threw for 15 TDs. I don’t think he was even OK. His stats were OK, but his actual play was lifted by his weapons. A non hurt Cam would have had an MVP season with those 3 WRs.

10 QBs threw more than double Teddy’s TDs and as far as I know, none of them said they would have run the ball instead with the game on the line.

All three 'stud' WRs had the best years of their careers under Bridgewater.

Like I said - the stats don't match up to the hate the guy receives. But it is what it is - it's not a hill I'm going to die on.

    • He can say what he feels, but he's not saying "the previous year, the team wasn't very good" he directly called his teammates out and in a way that is flat-out not true. "You are your record"? Oh ok, he's only had 3 winning seasons, but in my mind he isn't a loser, and I bet he isn't in his either - cause football is a team sport and wins and losses are on the team, even when one really bad player (Jimminy Pickles) can basically screw over everything.  And this comes on the heels of his thing about the MVP, which is fine, but also selfish. His teammates consistently went to bat for him... Just feels like he's more about himself.
    • Good point--I think this draft is great for us at this time--At the top of the draft, the DT (DEs/NTs in 3-4) are loaded.  The Edges are deep.  We need to double dip there--hoping to move back so we can add three players to that pool.  In free agency, if I were Morgan, I would focus on DBs and  ILB--fix the back end of the defense.  If he signed a S, CB, ILB, and TE, it would be cost effective.  In the draft, DE, Edge, and WR should be the priorities.  After that, OL Depth, QB depth, DB depth, RB depth.  My Free agent Targets:  TE: Juwan Johnson, Saints.  29, had over 500 yards with Saints. S: Julian Blackmon, Colts.  He will be one of the top free agents--gonna cost us, but not like an edge or WR. ILB: Tyrel Dodson, Dolphins.  80 tackles on just 854 snaps--under 27 years of age. CB: Mike Jackson, Carolina.  He is 28 and had 3 picks and was on the field at all times.  68 PFF score. NT:  best available for Evero's system.
