The NBA does not have a hard cap like the NFL. No trading for Bird rights or using mid level exemptions.

Other teams have way more draft capital than we do. And if you're counting on Watson saying he only wants to go to the Panthers, that's probably a pipe dream.

I believe this is the type of offer it would take for Carolina.  Miami can offer Tua on a rookie deal with 4 years left...and two firsts *this year*

Future firsts (potential misses) are not anywhere as appealing as proven stars on rookie deals. People use the term “draft capital” all the time and it makes me laugh.  Why would a potential #20 overall pick in 2022 be anywhere close to the value of a Derrick Brown or a Jeremy Chinn?

If you want the superstar badly enough and you’re the underdog to get him...you make the biggest offer and eat it.  Deshaun will have the option to approve or disapprove it but the Texans do too.

No. The Panthers could pull a Mike Ditka and offer their entire draft for him like New Orleans did for Ricky Williams and if the Texans don't want to consider the offer, they don't have to. 

You think Indianapolis, with all their cap space and need for a QB, is going to be considered if they came to the table with an offer? Hell no, the Texans don't want to get beat by Watson twice a year for the next decade, so they won't even consider a deal with the Colts, no matter what they offer.

This board his going to be full retard for the next two months or so, I personally would love Watson but probably not at what he would cost.. This team has a lot of holes and everyone keeps talking like he's a cure all (despite winning the same amount of starts as TB in 2020).

Pretty much.

Watson can say no to a deal. That doesn't mean he can negotiate one.

Throw in that if news were to come out that he only wanted to play for a specific team, the trade market for him would die a quick death, quite possibly to the point that trading him wouldn't even be worth the effort for the Texans.

Doesn't quite work that way, 2022s first would be the value of a 2021 second rounder, 2023s a mere third and so on....

Deshaun can’t just demand a certain team and it comes true.  The team has plenty of leverage...the trading teams just use that no trade clause to their advantage.

If the Texans don’t drool over that offer immediately, I don’t know what they’re thinking.  They’d tell Deshaun “we have a suiter in Carolina and we want you to approve it...there will be no other options moving forward.”

Deshaun would be in Charlotte the next day.

So enough with the “we have zero shot, it’s impossible” posts. We can get Deshaun, we just have to give up some good players in return.

Yeah...No way in hell I'd offer that package.

It's not that we have no shot. It's that what it would take for us to have a shoy is cost prohibitive.

Ask teams that have made similar trades if it was worth it (the Vikings and Bears, for example).

Uh what?  You think we could trade a second rounder this year for a first next year?  And a third this year for a first in 2023?  Well then why tf aren't we doing that now??

He has no say-so over the terms. The Texans will decide who they negotiate with. And, as Watson himself has said, the Jets may be a good place for him. But the Texans may decide they won't listen to any offers from the Jets just to be sure Watson doesn't get what he wants.

 

It doesn't matter who they want to negotiate with, he gets final approval.
