Let's say you are Deshaun Watson, bias aside, where do you want to go?

Unless the Chargers trade them Herbert lol.... yeah I know other LA just the only way.

The Chargers have the most valuable asset in the NFL - an emerging elite QB on a rookie contract. They're one of the few teams that absolutely shouldn't be interested in potentially acquiring Watson.

Yeah, I don't either. The Rams are already $31M in the red for next year and Goff has them hamstrung. They also don't have a 1st round pick to offer this year. The only way this works is if there's a way for them to include Goff and his contract in the deal and for the Texans to be interested in that which they shouldn't be.

I know, More an allusion to the fact the Rams don't have a shot at him short of giving them Donald...

I fully expect to be berated with the "another Watson thread" jargon but I'm genuinely interested to see what people think.  And this is a reason why I really do feel we're a very probable spot, so it's going to be a wild few weeks folks.

For me?:

1. Miami Dolphins: They have a fantastic looking defense that can get me the ball in good spots, a young promising OL, and a future stud TE in Mikey G.  Not to mention a very exciting young head coach.  Solid situation.

2. San Fransisco 49ers: They've proven they can compete with the best even with meh QB play.  A defense with star talent, one of the more QB friendly HCs in the league, and a cornerstone NFL organization.  Kittle, Deebo, Aiyuk, Wilson Jr. is a very solid offensive group.

3. Carolina Panthers: Close to home but not entirely, a promising young HC, great talent sprinkled throughout (CMC, DJ, Burns, Chinn), a franchise on the upswing, good street word on team culture.  (Don't underestimate the word on the street about Rhule). Also, CMC, Anderson, DJ? I'd def want to mingle with that crew.

4. Chicago Bears: I mean, if I were a player, I'd want to be a Chicago Bear.  The legacy, Soldier Field, city, all of the above.  Nagy seems like a decent coach, but most importantly has kept them afloat with god awful QB play.  Even a 12-4 season a few years back.  Great defense, and then Montgomery, Anthony Miller, Allen Robinson, Mooney, Kmet...that could make for some exciting games.

5. Denver Broncos: Low key have the most promising WR corps in the NFL.  Fangio & that team should take a substantial leap this coming season, especially if they can get the defense rolling a bit more like it's 2015.

The Falcons would logically be his top choice...

...why didn't you include them?

Miami is also in a great state for income taxes.  SF--in the worst state.  Carolina Panthers are ranked 14th in the NFL.

  • Florida:  NO income tax (Cost of living is higher)
  • North Carolina:  5.5% income tax
  • California:  13.3% income tax  (and the SF area is one of the most expensive places to live in the world)

Ok, say Watson will be making $35m per year.  Here is what he nets (income tax only):

  • Florida:  $35m
  • North Carolina: $33.975m
  • California:  $30.345m

https://www.kiplinger.com/slideshow/taxes/t055-s001-what-state-taxes-will-nfl-free-agents-pay/index.html

Now let's look at "cost of living".  The value on the dollar (cost of living) in each state is:

  • Florida $1.00
  • North Carolina $1.10
  • California  87 cents

https://www.patriotsoftware.com/blog/accounting/average-cost-living-by-state/

Now, math time.  What is his contract actually worth if you consider income taxes and cost of living?

  • Florida: $35m after income tax and $1.00 cost of living value on the dollar----$35m
  • NC: $33.975 after income tax and multiplied by $1.10 cost of living value on the dollar--$37.345
  • Cal:  $30.345m after income tax, multiplied by .87 cost of living value on the dollar--$26.4m

So if the player is considering taxes and cost of living, Miami and Carolina probably cause the player to net $10m more per year.

Do not forget, this is before federal income taxes and agent fees.  It is reasonable to assume that the player realizes about 50% of the figures above.

Not trying to derail the thread, but if I am a player, I think about this stuff.

Blank can afford it.

Well, the cap doesn’t really have anything to do with what an owner can afford.   They could eat a coach’s contract.   Cap is set by the league dictates what you can and can’t put on the field.

so let’s say the cap was an even 175 million next season.   Matt Ryan and Julio are going to take up about 70 million next year for Atlanta.   No matter if they play there or not.   So it makes more sense for them to play there.
