Fox analyst says he heard that Watson has interest in Panthers!

I don't understand how people aren't willing to give up a young talent to get Watson.   The importance of a good QB cannot be overstated.  The QB position is just so much more valuable than a WR, DE, or RB (yes, even when you have a do-it-all talent who does heavy lifting in the passing game too).

Thought exercise: if you swap any one of DJ Moore, Brian Burns, or CMC for Watson and then compare the two rosters (pre-swap vs. post-swap) side by side, which roster would you rather have.  You rather have the one with Watson 10 times out of 10.

And yes, 1st round picks are important.  And we've been pretty good at picking impact players with ours.  But there's no guarantee that we find a star player or even a competent one with our first round picks moving forward.  I'd rather invest that draft capital in a proven commodity at the most important position in football.

No, I wouldn't trade two of our young talented core players for Watson.  And yes, there is a limit on how much draft capital I am willing to unload for him.  But some of you are really overvaluing our players and picks.

But they will take contracts into consideration. That doesn't mean that it doesn't have a strong possibility of happening! Trade opportunities like this just don't come along! Of course you're going to have to give something of value to get something of value.

I just think that many Huddlers just don't have any idea how to valuate the players. They act like CMC's contract is such the impediment, or they think we should give up two first round players--or more--plus multiple first round picks--and day two picks (like our players, who are on cheap contracts by the way, relatively have little value). I don't believe any of that's the case.

We can make a deal if all parties involved wants a deal! No one is going to come away in the perfect situation.

Everything you said is spot on. The problem arises when the cellar dwellers chime in with  ridiculously inflated offers that we can't remotely match. That's when I hope we will laugh in their face.

Someone will assuredly out bid us. Our only hope is his list of teams will be short. If the Jets or Dolphins are in the mix then we're pretty much out. They have to much fire power.

The plot thickens, as Fox Sports analyst Jason McIntyre has heard things...

"...the Carolina Panthers are a potential player...according to Fox Sports analyst Jason McIntyre."

McIntyre said Friday on Colin Cowherd's show that Watson has told those close to him that he wouldn't rule out playing for Matt Rhule in Charlotte.

"While I was prepping for this segment I had somebody influential in the league text me and say the team I've heard is the Carolina Panthers, a deep sleeper for Deshaun Watson," McIntyre said. "Apparently, he is telling some folks he would not mind going home. He grew up in Atlanta, about four hours from Carolina and Matt Rhule has set up a pretty good foundation there in Carolina ... they have a lot of good offensive weapons."

Take it for what it's worth...

I said this a couple of days ago.  Being he played at Clemson and is adored in SC.  I could see where he might want to come back to the area he played college football.

Very true, but doesn’t he have the final say where he goes? A team could outbid us, but our deal could be good enough and he’d rather come here than NYJ. I’m not saying that’s true, it’s hypothetical.

I didn't see how bad the cap hit from CMC would be. Deshaun wouldn't make much impact in 2021, although after that it would obviously skyrocket.

Yeah, it would be nice to NOT have signed that CMC contract as fuging early as we did. Boy that thing is an albatross in a deal like this. CMC would be ridiculously good trade bait.

We currently have 120,00,000 cap space for 2022 just with where the cap sits now. Yes Watsons salary will be high, but that is currently the going rate for a high end franchise QB. Also, his salary next year is only 10 million. It’s absolutely possible to do this thing and still keep most of our core players around.

Per Jonathan Jones...

The Panthers would have to unload Teddy Bridgewater and his contract if they wanted Watson, though it seems unlikely the Texans would want to take that on considering the way he played in 2020.

That'd mean the Panthers would have to trade something of substantial value with a quarterback to give and with the least desirable first-round spot among the group. Panthers owner David Tepper would have to part with Christian McCaffrey, the face of the franchise, and likely more. Defensive end Brian Burns, entering his third season in the league, would also likely be requested in order to get such a deal done.

NFL Insider Notes

So basically picks, McCaffrey and Burns

They can have CMC. No way do they get Burns. Unless all they’re asking is CMC and Burns for Watson straight up. That would sting, but we would still have all our draft picks to replace Burns. And we’ve seen CMC can be adequately replaced with someone like Mike Davis. Good RBs are a dime a dozen right now.

LOL @ Harden being a low character guy!  He got exactly what he wanted, and anybody of import is holding it against him!

The Texans' hand will be forced one way or another, and Watson will get paid by them in dead cap, AND by someone else--top dollar! That's the power of the no-trade clause!

My issue with Harden is him getting fat and not trying early in the season with Houston. That’s just a POS thing to do to your current teammates. I get he wanted out but there’s a much better way to go about doing it.

    • At this rate, maybe he'll be a decent 8-9 QB on his 3rd HC by year 6. Standards are so low around here now. Tepper has done some serious damage to the fan base.
