Rapoport: Panthers expected to be in the mix for Watson.

Yeah they do. Their leverage is that there will be no shortage of teams interested in potentially acquiring Watson. Even if he's utterly done in Houston, they still have plenty of leverage.

It all depends how far Watson wants to take it. If he takes it as far as Palmer did in Cincinnati, then he has the leverage and the Texans have very little, especially because of the NTC that he'd only waive for certain teams. Normally the teams have the leverage but with a star QB who is willing to sit out (that's yet to be seen with Deshaun) they have really no choice but to trade him where he wants to go.

Everyone speculating about compensation really has no idea what the price is going to be. There's so many factors going in to this that its impossible to predict.

1) They're most likely going to have a fire sale. Their team is fuged for the next few years regardless because of BOB's moves. JJ Watt and Deshaun are both expected to be gone. I don't know if this raises or lowers trade value.

2) Nick Caserio. The Patriots have a tendency to just say fug it and let go of players for less than they're really worth.

3) Deshaun has a no trade clause. That has to lower the compensation since he can just say no to any team for any reason. If he wants to come here or any other specific team he can just deny any other trade and we can low ball them.

4) This is an unprecedented scenario. There has never been a 25 year old QB that is this good demanding a trade. Carson Palmer, Jimmy G, Sam Bradford, and more have all been traded but none were nearly as good as Watson. Jay Cutler is the only one remotely comparable and he got two firsts, while being much less talented than Watson.

The team does have some leverage, they don't' have to do anything.  What if the Jets and 49ers make offers.  Watson says he will go to the 49ers and then the Texans say no, we will trade you to the Jets or not at all.  What does he do then?

Invokes his no trade clause.

Forcing them to trade him wouldn't be easy, but if they do agree to trade him he does have some power to influence where he goes.

It's worth noting that Fitterer was there when they got Wilson for a 3rd and what that meant for their team as a whole....After his big deal the Seahawks haven't done poo.

It's not happening as much as I would love having DW4 here being a Clemson fan.

Like I said, it's all dependent on if Watson will sit out. If he will then he just sits out and the Texans are absolutely fuged and will be utter garbage while not getting anything in return for Watson if they don't trade him. The longer he sits out the less they get in return in a potential trade. Also important to note that every single team in the league who has any tiny question about their QB situation will be in on this. Many will be priced out of the market fairly quickly but every single team that doesn't already have their guaranteed franchise QB will be inquiring at least. It's in the Texans' best interest to have this solved before the draft, as if they do trade him they'd have a great opportunity to replace him in this draft.

This has Saints written all over it, they know how to trade for people with negative cap. We have no idea how to make trades like this lol

To be fair you really don’t have any clue what we know how to do considering we have a new owner and a brand new GM and front office. This ain’t your Daddy’s Panthers.

so....he invokes his no trade clause and he is still on the team he doesn't want to be on.  I agree he does have some power but its not absolute like some people around here thing, especially in the short term.  The Texans can easily do nothing and it really doesn't hurt them.

so if he sits out they are fuged?  Why?  If they let him go for nothing they are also fuged.  They were terrible with him last year, if they trade him they are probably going to still be terrible for the short term.  Its not like they were expecting to win the Super Bowl this year.

I don't think it hurts the Texan's reputation to wait at all.  Their reputation is all ready garbage.  If anything if they let him go for nothing they will just be made fun of more.  If anything Watson is the one that might start to take a reputation hit, once the season rolls around and his teammates are out there playing and he is refusing to play some fans and media will start to turn on Watson.

He could sit out all year and teams would still trade for him next offseason.

Speaking of the draft there is a chance they don't trade him until the draft happens, if you trade before yo don't know how the picks are going to go. They might love Fields, and not Wilson, so they might not be willing to trade with Miami until they know Fields will be available at that pick.  Same with Atlanta.  There is a very good chance this could turn into a draft night trade.

If they like Garoppolo then doing something before the draft make more sense, trading with the Jets would be more likely before the draft, because everyone pretty much agrees who is going first.  A lot of people like to act like QB2 and QB3 are interchangeable but in reality a lot of teams will probably convince themselves they like one of them a lot more than the other.

I love Cam Newton to death, but Deshaun Watson would without a doubt be the best quarterback to ever suit up for the Panthers.

I really hope this team gets it done.  I'd be 100% willing to part ways with our next two 1st round picks (if you really think about it, assuming we would have taken a QB this year anyway, it is only 1 1st round pick we're giving up).  And of course throw in some other stuff as well.

Gonna try to not get my hopes up though.  Elite QBs don't get traded or released for a reason.
