Opinions on a cheaper quarterback option

No to Hurts. At Bama, he was a one read, roll to the right, and scramble QB. The system at OU allowed him to put up big numbers, but that system does that for all QBs.
Being a Bama fan, I paid attention to Hurts when he came in this year. He still seems to be a one read, roll to the right, and scramble QB.

He could develop, but folks have been trying to develop him into a passer for about four years now.

It would make sense for the Panthers if they can’t get who they want at #8 to take BPA and offer a day two pick for a player like Hurts or Jordan Love. The packers may want more than that for Love or they may just realize they made a mistake drafting the heir with so much left in the AR tank and take what they can get.

I can see Rodgers playing another 4-5 years easily....and nobody is trading a 1st for Love.

They still need a competent backup as a contingency plan if Wentz truly is beyond saving. Even if you wanna be generous and give Wentz a 50/50 chance at returning to form, trading Hurts would be an incredibly irresponsible move. I doubt their locker room situation would be cancerous enough to outweigh the disaster of a ruined Wentz + Nate Sudfeld QB room lol. Especially since the main architect for that abomination of a season finale was Doug Pederson, who was fired.

I think Stafford could be a decent QB for the short term but I would prefer someone younger like Hurts or even Winston.  They are young enough where if they did work out you would get some long term benefit.

Ultimately though I would just prefer to draft one this year, even if I have to trade up, you can spend an eternity chasing cheaper options at QB.

They don't have to, but teams don't like quarterback controversies either. And mind you, Hurts was pretty pissed at being sat down in the final game.

Like I said at the top though, speculation.

Yeah, he was pissed at the dude who benched him for a complete scrub.

*Spoiler Alert* - that dude was fired.

No thx. He will be 33 when the season starts and we are not a vet QB away from competing. Why dump heavy money on a non-mobile QB that is on the descent to his trajectory vs. a QB on a rookie deal for the next 4 years or building one more year of assets before finding our franchise signal caller in '22.

This process was never meant to be a 1 or 2 year deal. Rhule and Co. are playing the long game and, IMO, Stafford doesn't fit that.

I could see Stafford in Indy, Chicago or SF....much closer to competing for a deep playoff run.

Acutally yes. We are a QB away from competing. We're not far away as you think. We just need a few pieces on the line, defensive backfield, and 1 or 2 LBs. We're in the playoffs this year if we had Stafford. Teddy made lots of people think our line is way worse than it actually is. He had plenty of time every game to make plays and just didn't.

People put way too much fault on Bridgewater.

This is NOT a good roster. Bridgewater, whilst disappointing in the Redzone, was ok for us at QB - 3,700 passing yards (4k combined yards), 20 combined TDs. Not great, but not bad. Pre-injury he was a solid game manager.

Yes, the step up to a Stafford is HUGE, but Stafford doesn't play defence. He doesn't block for himself either. We have major talent deficiencies to resolve before we're a consistent Playoff team - which is why all this talk of trading away all our Draft capital for the shot at a non-generational QB prospect makes me cringe.
