Mac Jones

People are getting far too wrapped up in the numbers and success and not looking critically.  In that game last night, he only made one or two throws that really showed (or required) any sort of arm strength.

What he did well last night:

  • Showed *exceptional* touch.  His passes were incredibly catchable balls in nearly every case.
  • Showed very good ability to work through progressions and find a guy.
  • Made easy throws look easy.  Don't under-value this ability.
  • Showed pretty good awareness in the pocket and ability to keep his eyes downfield.

What worked against him:

  • When he found the open man, that man was SOOOOOO open his ability to fit a ball in a tight space was never challenged.
  • His line did very well most of the night giving him time to move through all his reads.  He had FOREVER to make decisions.

The questions that I haven't seen him answer:

  • Can he fit a ball in a tight windows consistently?  He had one REALLY nice throw last night.  I'd like to see that more, since the NFL will demand it.
  • Can he make FAST decisions.  He clearly understands the game and his offense.  Can he do it when he doesn't have all day?

I wouldn't be mad if we drafted him, though I still question whether he is first round talent.

Mac is also a product of a great system. I see the Pats taking him late 1st round. He's a Brady clone. Smart and accurate and plays great in a system. I also think he would be good for us as we are trying to build a system, not like have a Cam and build around the QB. I'm not sure if he's worth the 8th pick but mid to late 1st round I would. Sit a year under Teddy. Maybe moving back picks up an extra 2nd round.

Mac has an NFL OL, NFL WRs, and an NFL RB.  Now, he could have become the weakest link, but he stepped up.  Is he a first rounder?  No, but will he go in the first round this draft?

12-15 teams will be going after a starting QB this year.  I think he will go in the late first round--Indy, NE, Pittsburgh, for example.  Something tells me that all of these teams will be seeking a QB.

He's probably ideally suited for a West Coast system (which yes, we run).

I don't know that he'll ever be more than a half decent game manager though. Yes, you can win championships with that kind of quarterback, but you have to build exceptionally well around them.

And that's the thing: The problem with quarterbacks from dominant programs is that all too often, the talent around them is so head and shoulders above everybody else that they wind up looking better than they really are. Then once they hit the NFL where it's more of a level playing field, they get exposed.

I will say the lack of athleticism or arm strength doesn't really bother me because plenty of the NFL's best quarterbacks haven't been athletic specimens. At the pro level, that kind of thing is overrated. It's good to have, but not necessary.

Bottom Line: I mean, maybe he's another Joe Montana and nobody knows it yet (nobody knew it with Montana either) but I wouldn't bet on it. I'd say it's more likely he's another Brad Johnson.

Name an Alabama QB that turned out to be good...WRs won’t be that open in the NFL. Tua might eventually be good, but don’t forget people thought he was gods gift.

Trey Lance is the best QB in this draft not named Trevor.

Ace, it is so hard to gauge him, but you could be right---and in my heart of hearts, when I am drafting in my mocks with the intense pressure that coincides with mocking, that is the realistic QB I take.  I feel nervous about Fields, I feel better about Wilson but a little like I am drafting Clausen, and I think I am taking a system QB in Mac, he seems to be the quintessential NFL career backup.  But I remind myself--if Jones is a good QB because he is on a dominant team, Lance is too.  So then I look at skill sets--release, reading, feet, etc. and I cannot throw Lance in the "B" pile like I thought I could.  He checks all the boxes.

A good thread recently was based on an article (someone posted it here) that there are no QB universities like their used to be---in fact, if you look at starting QBs over the past few years, NC State might be #1.  So who knows?

QB on the best team in the country, with the best players at the skill and OL with a great running game, he has an average arm, & limited athleticism.

He's a day two QB, don't fool yourselves gents.

Lawrence, Fields, Wilson, Lance those are the four first rounders. Trask, and the afformentioned might see early success if they go to a team towards the end of a round simply because those teams are better. But he's not an impact player / difference maker on a bad team.

If Jones is being criticized for his supporting cast then lance is undraftable
