Potential Trade Target: Matt Ioannidis

Untouchable

Recommended Posts

Matt Ioannidis, DT, Washington (6034, 310 lbs, 32.375" arms, 10.125" hands, 80.125" wing, 27 yo)

Since breaking into the lineup in 2017 his sacks have steadily gone up and his run defense has continued to improve.  A torn bicep ended his 2020 campaign in his third game after posting 1.5 sacks, but 2019 saw him hit a career high 8.5 sacks.  Rivera switched from a 34 to a 43 this season so Matt moved from a 34 DE into the 43 UT/3-tech role.

Washington’s defense was still very successful without him in the lineup, but they should be with a heavy investment in the position over the last 3 year.  Every defensive starter in their playoff game was a first round pick and it should be noted that Ioannidis was not a starter in any of his games in 2020 after starting 15 games in 2019.  Washington resigned him before the 2019 season to a steal of a contract and a trade would leave Washington on the hook for 3k while the team getting him would have him on a 2 yr, 12.4 mil contract.

There is significant familiarity with the staff too.  Ioannidis played at Temple from 2012-2015 which perfectly coincides with Rhule/Snow’s time and should know the defense very well.  Rivera might be willing to move on from his backup as well as he looks to make his mark and implement his scheme more in year 2 in Washington and with his significant depth at the position.  Short’s likely entrance into the market and Rivera’s familiarity with him could help in this decision too.

If Washington is willing to part with a solid player on a relatively cheap contract, a day 3 pick might do it or there are a ton of Rivera guys still on our roster so that familiarity could be a big help in making a trade happen.  Interior pass rush has been a massive issue the last couple of years with Short's injury absence.  Obada was the only one who offered consistent interior pressure during the year but run defense is not going to be a strong suit for him and we'll need to resign him too.  Brown was able to come on late which was very promising to see but giving him a running mate would be a huge boost to a struggling defense that still needs a bunch of parts.

nice work.

am i the only one perfectly comfortable letting zach kerr start this year? he's on a cheap deal, well-liked in the locker room, and effective enough. i'd just as soon put our resources into retooling the secondary and offensive line.

I'd rather play Kerr than trade for anyone.

While his contract is attractive, we just aren't going to be players in the market this year.  Bear in mind that we (currently) only have 6 million in cap space next year.  Yes, I know, we're going to cut some dead weight.  We need to since Taylor Moton is our priority.  Right now, we can't even offer Moton a contract.  I'm afraid our FA this year is going to be Gettleman level bargain hunting.  We just don't have the space, not because we've been grossly irresponsible, but that cap shrink hit everyone hard.

I echo the praise, just why would you move what you described? Hes very good, cheap, and hard working young baller? Id keep him unless he came to me and stated good reasons for wanting a trade. That is the best DL in football, he may enjoy his role. Have to really bring the goods to move him. I understand wanting him on the panthers, just dont see why RR would do the panthers a big favor.

Not at all. Kerr was good, and I liked what I saw from Roy as a depth player. Another solid depth player and a little luck and we're set at DT, IMO. Although, if we lose Obada to free agency, a speedier guy would be nice to have in the stable.

This isn’t a dig on OP, this thread was well founded, but trade target thread in general make no sense to me. You could make a thread about why we should trade for 100+ players. Too many unknowns and chances are teams won’t be willing to trade away good players

I'd love another beast of a DT, but compared to OL it's hard to prioritize.

Kerr was a bright spot for me too. I'd like him to stay. He brings an upbeat energy to the team.

he's earned it, definitely. Still need a young pass rushing DT to groom tho. Liked what I saw from Roy in spot duty this year too. But he's a block eater
