Then why never bring up Hurney as being, in any way responsible for signing Bridgewater? Until hours after Hurney was fired? And you buy that? Is it information or just hoping the people still here didn’t blow these decisions.

Just commenting Hurney thinks we can win, and him having any power to act on it, are two different things.

Because Zach doesn't comment much at all these days. And frankly, given the amount of flack he got over the Newton story (about which he was 100% correct) it's hard to blame him.

Saints have been in cap hell for a decade, the cap as excuse for cheap front offices

wrong, its an excuse for bad front offices who can't find cheap talent

A lot of those years that the Saints were winning they were doing it with reduced cap because of all of their dead money.

They have had some really good draft classes recently which has enabled them to continue to win while being in "cap hell"

Fans don't want to believe, or don't understand, but most teams spend roughly the same amount over time, there are actually league rules for this.  Fans notice when a rival adds a FA but they forget about the vet the team cuts to create space.

I see plenty of posts made during the season. None mention Hurney as making the decision on TB. And it wouldn’t have mattered if he wanted to, Rhule, with his former coach as advisor had the only vote.

Do you, or anyone else, really think that Hurney made any decision this off-season, without direct approval from Rhule? Just because Zack put together a scenario that tries to absolve Rhule, doesn’t mean it’s reality.

Here is a quick look at every teams estimated 2021 salary cap space against their 2020 record

Top right= good record, good cap position

Top left= good record, bad cap position

Bottom right= bad record, good cap position

Bottom left= disaster

So the Panthers are on the brink of disaster.

nice.

So most good teams are in a "bad" cap situation. Make me wonder how last years chart looked like. And the one before that..

He's not trying to absolve Rhule. He's just stating what happened.

And yes, Marty was still GM and still made decisions. Tepper kept him on specifically to help Rhule learn the NFL. So while he may have been defanged by the end of the season, it wasn't that way from the beginning.

Between Kawann Short ($14.5M), Stephen Weatherly ($5.95M), and Matt Paradis ($8.53M) the team is set to open up nearly $29M in additional cap space. Burris ($3.9M) is another potential cap casualty.

That would put the team at nearly $40.5M in cap space and jump the team just above where CIN is sitting on the chart.

Any additional funds could also be netted from restructuring CMC's and/or Shaq's contracts. Considering the reduced salary cap this upcoming season, the Panthers are in a much, much better place than a lot of other squads are.

2022 salary cap only has $89M committed to it with that number set to be $68M when Bridgewater is released following the upcoming season. We about to go shoppiiiiiing

So which ones did Hurney make? Where Rhule had no say, and Hurney just walked in and said “I signed ____ ______”. You actually believe that’s how it was run?

And what was the purpose of the Hurney/Bridgewater comment if not an attempt to shift blame towards Hurney?

The purpose was to clarify what happened in a discussion where people were asking that question. It's not sinister.

And yes, I firmly believe there was a power struggle. Marty lost. That's why he's fired.

This is not counting for the players that will be released in Short, Weatherly, and a few others that will give us some cap room. Once that happens, well. It won't be bordering on disaster. It'll be a tad bit better.

I don't disagree, but in general the same applies to every team.  Everyone has guys they need to get rid of / restructure / etc to improve their cap.

Not sinister. More gullible. Ever since that one post, I’ve seen numerous posts about how all the bad decisions are now Hurneys fault. He lost his power struggle the day Rhule signed a contract. He was kept as Rolodex and timely scapegoat. Why else would he have been here? His ability to destroy a roster, TWICE, since his last successful season. On an expiring contract.
