Trade Steve Smith

What was the ruling on the Eagles touchdown? I forget.

At the end of the vid the ref says:

After review, the runner lost control of the ball prior to going in the endzone...

And, RnR -it is an attempt at humor. Jackson is sick, he is definitely making quite a highlight reel for himself, but I couldnt let JR run his mouth like that. Just tryin to make yous smile...

Our goodly forum moderators should merge this thread with the other "trade Steve Smith" thread, if there truly are three of them.

I think it is fair to say that while Steve Smith is still an elite receiver, he has declined compared to his former self.

We've seen Smith drop or tip many catchable passes this year. That's acceptable for high paid receivers maybe once every other game, but consistently twice a game? Great catches (particularly on risky throws) are memorable, and Smith still makes a few, but his numerous drops don't make the headlines.

Wnd what about the Steve Smith whose yardage after catch(YAC) rivaled the very best in the league? I recall Smith getting major YAC, even in years when he was double covered. Why has Smith's YAC dropped so dramatically? You can't rightly pin THAT on Jake Delhomme, now can you?

As is the case with many receivers at the beginning of their career, and the beginning of their family years, Steve Smith once played with desperation and fire, like each play he made secured a good life for his family. But he's a millionaire now, he wants to protect his continued career for the long term, more than he wants to make the play in the short term. All he has to do now, is be Carolina's WR1, he doesn't have to PROVE anything anymore, and that is part of the problem. The Steve Smith we need is the one that had to prove something.

Steve is still very fast, still has great pivot, and still makes surprisingly strong blocks against larger defenders. He is absolutely our best receiver, and still deserves double coverage, or at least one man-to-man, plus a zoned defender. But in years before, Smith could regularly juke a cornerback or safety, using their size against them, and instantly be 2 full strides apart from the defender (wide open), now Smith simply isn't getting physically separated from the tall muscular defensive backs anymore.

I don't know what's different, whether its just speed, or some adjustment in defensive technique that people are repeating against him, but it seems to be working. He isn't getting open as much, and that is why he isn't getting the throws. We can sit here and argue offensive playcalling till the cows come home, but at some point he has to recreate the physical matchup problems he used to. Until Smith gets separation, Delhomme doesn't have a choice not to throw to him, because he's getting intercepted when he tries to force it.

Wide receivers are like rockstars. They have egos, they have mouths, you have to expect it. They make the most glorious and high profile plays....or they look like an idiot trying. The great ones try and succeed, and they make it to the NFL's "front page". The attitude goes with the job, right up until the point where you hit your own teammates in the nose. That line was crossed, and there's no taking it back, when Smith tried to, it came across as fake and superficial. Probably because it wasn't heartfelt. Yeah, football is a passioante sport, but if you have more passion than the next guy, then you damn sure better show it in playmaking. You'd better be on the "front page", or else your attitude is totally unproductive. Smith is the edge of that, not because he's causing all that much trouble, but because he just isn't the stud he once was.

Trading Smith wouldn't help us. Admitting he isn't as good as he used to be would.

No, not new. I've been coming here for at least 5 years, even when the site address was PanthersHuddle.com. I just rarely post.

I'll tell "trade Steve Smith" the way Fox tells it, because that's how it actually is. We will take a look at everything that each player brings to the table, compare it to what the teams needs are, and evaluate each player individually, then we will make the moves that are best for the team.

That essentially means that Steve Smith won't be traded because even though he has a hefty salary he is still our best wide receiver, and we don't have a suitable replacement for him. If Carolina obtained another receiver who could compete with Smith, either now or in the future, all bets on Steve's staying would instantly be off. But that hasn't happened yet.

Given our current roster, the trade/cut dynamic for all the other receivers is not nearly as certain. Jarrett is the elephant in the room. The Panthers can't wait till its fiscally reasonable to dump his ass.

Wow, just wow. I don't usually post on threads like this but I had to step in and give me 2 cents. For those of you who are saying that Steve Smith has declined, you have to be kidding. I guess we could have said Randy Moss had declined when he went to Oakland but once he got a great coach and a QB who could give him the ball look what has happened. Plain and simple folks, without Steve Smith, we don't win 3 games. Yes, his stats are not remarkable (if you don't know why, you are blind) but teams have to account for him every play. Teams would stack the box more than they have been knowing we don't have superman out there. He still has it folks and that "attitude" is the reason why he is so good. You might as well ship out players who voice their opinions then. Beason, hoover in that 2007? season I believe. Something needs to be fixed and it isn't Steve Smith.
